Greg Chappell denies making obscene gestures at Ganguly supporters
The conspiracies theories begin to fly as Greg Chappell has denied making any obscene gestures to protesting Sourav Ganguly supporters. Speculation is rife. Was Chappell framed? Was it someone else's hand? Was there a third hand on the grassy knoll? According to M Baladitya, the Indian team's media manager:
He told me that while giving fielding practice to the players, he injured a finger. He was only attending to the finger in the team bus.Ah yes, the famous 'bird' injury that stiffens the middle finger while strangely folding all the other fingers.

John apparently your "reader" is pointing to http://telegraphindia.com/1051127/asp/frontpage/story_5528065.asp
well I won't read too much into this story. Apparently The Calcutta crowd and their passion for cricket had led to unruly events before and I am sure this is not last .. in fact Sunny Gavaskar had publicly said that he won't ever play again in Calcutta .. mother of all ironies ,not only did he play in Calcutta ,his Son now represents same State ( reason well I had explained that in 90's Mumbai players went out of favor for India cap so many Mumbai Players opted to play for other teams)

There is a huge furore over the finger episode of Greg Chappell to Kolkata crowd. Every one is joining the bandwagon in denouncing Greg Chappell for “fingering”. I have hardly come across anyone denouncing the behaviour of the Kolkata crowd. This parochialism , just because Sourav was n’t in , does not speak good about our being patriotic and “ Indian”. It was sad that the crowd booed one of the greatest legends of all time , Greg Chappell and the ever-solid soft-spoken Indian “wall” Rahul Dravid - just to show solidarity with one individual. This is not the first time Eden Gardens and Kolkata crowds have behaved in this deplorable manner . Several incidents leading to stoppages, cancellations and burning stands is fresh in the minds of sports lovers. It is this boorish behaviour that first needs to be denounced and Kolkatans be cautioned that staging a match in Eden Gardens may be a remote dream , if such extreme parochial and churlish behaviour is witnessed again. They have a price to pay for it.
As for Greg, while he should not have done , what he did, it was an outburst of a natural emotion initiated and provoked by the crowd . It is not surprising that Greg did what he did . How do expect a tiger to show the character of a cow ? This issue is best forgotten and the media should assiduously avoid making it an issue, and move on . The Kolkata crowd was cheering SA , and it is a glorious ignominy for West Bengal. If you are Indian , feel for India. Losing and winning are two sides of the same coin.

The crowd at Eden is very passionate about cricket. When their beloved Ganguly had been kept out of the Indian team for reasons other than cricket, they are not to be blamed for their behaviour !!! When Azhar had been omitted from a match in Hyderabad after the debacle in the England World cup, hyderabadis had taken to streets in protest. Why don't we call them parochial !!! Do we have different yardsticks for different states and different players ??? And regarding Chappell.....had it been anywhere else other than India, that bugger would have to publicly apoligize for his crass behaviour...but it was downplayed here.....India proves it is the same country whose people are used to being slaves of these firangs!! Had it been any other country, Chappall had been kicked out by now.
Media and BCCI should be ashamed to downplay this incident. Shame shame !!!

This mail is for Greg Chappell. I have been asked to send this across because of my reservations against existing "Run out" umpiring signals. does he think there is a need to change umpiring signals (sixes, for instance) or change the nature of pitches to cement, for instance, to avoid unnecessary talk about preparation/maintenance/state of pitches by commentators?
because of some code violations, is there a possibility of visa rejections to foreign tours by the BCCI? or possibilities of luggage checking directored by officials sitting at the entrance before flight travel?

Greg Chappell: in a new controversy
Sensational television footage today captured Greg Chappell, India's coach, making an obscene finger gesture to a crowd of protestors while boarding the team bus in Kolkata. It is not clear what the exact nature of the provocation was.
Preceding the one-dayer at Kolkata, where India were obliterated by South Africa, there had been considerable public demonstrations against the exclusion of former captain and local favourite Sourav Ganguly from the team. On Thursday Ganguly was included in the Test squad to play Sri Lanka at Chennai, starting on December 2, though reports from today's match indicate that it wasn't enough to placate a boisterous Eden Gardens crowd.
Neither Chappell nor the BCCI has yet commented on the incident. However, a number of television channels replayed the incident through the evening.
RED-LETTER DAY: Ashok Ganguly, Chairman, CBSE, receives the first copy of the special cover, released by the Department of Posts, from Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor, during the golden jubilee celebrations of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan group of schools in Chennai on Thursday. (From left) Mrs. Y.G.Parthasarathy, dean and director of PSBB, K.V. Sundar Rajan, Postmaster General, Western Region, N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu, and David T Hopper, U.S. Consul-General, Chennai, are in the picture.
