Australia poach England's bowling coach Troy Cooley
In a huge coaching coup, Cricket Australia have signed up Troy Cooley as Australian bowling coach. Well, technically, England stole the Tasmanian Cooley from us in the first place so you could say all's square now. I think it's great news as having a specialist bowling coach (or at least the quality of the bowling) seemed to be the difference between the sides during the Ashes. It's not so much important that we got the English bowling coach - just that we got a good one (personally, I'd prefer we got Dennis Lillee but that's never gonna happen). It also explains why there's been such a delay in Cricket Australia doing anything about a bowling coach - I didn't buy their previous statement that they didn't have the resources to add extra specialists to the coaching staff. Cooley comes off his current contract with the ECB in May 2006, just a few months before the next Ashes series. It may not be enough time to make a tangible difference next summer but it spells good news in the long term for Australian bowling.

Amazing that they let him go actually. I saw an interview of Trescothick and he couldn't believe it! Are the problems between CA and Lillee so bad? Well, maybe you can have McGrath coach your bowlers in 2 years time!

Wish I'd seen that interview with Trescothick - would be interesting to see English reactions. Maybe they figured they'd milked Cooley for what he was worth and it was time to move on. All I know about Lillee and the CA is they fell out a year or so ago when the CA refused to pay Lillee what he thought he was worth - their relationship doesn't seem to have gotten any better since.

If Lillee can't or won't, we could do a hell of a lot worse than get Thommo in to help. Now I know he can rub people up the wrong way, and his own action wasn't what the purists would consider orthodox, but the man has a good cricketing brain and knows what makes a quick tick! I'd never heard of Cooley. What was his claim to fame? Maybe he discovered the secret mint reverse swing thingo.
