Steve Waugh debunks sledging myth
I recently read an Inside Cricket interview with Steve Waugh (thanx to Mahesh for sending me a link to the online version). There's interesting stuff in there. He talks about wishing he'd hugged twin brother Mark during the whole booking scandal. Like Adam Gilchrist, he obviously thinks there's not enough hugging in Australian cricket. Probably the standout part of the interview is when asked about his famous "You just dropped the World Cup" sledge to Herschelle Gibbs:
"No, I wasn't quite that clever. I wish I could claim that and the myth is sort of perpetuated and I'm going to break it a bit but it wasn't quite that, I just said: 'Look, do you realise you've just cost your team the game.'"Finding out he never actually said the coolest sledge ever was about as disillusioning as Alice Cooper confessing he never bit the head off a chicken. Somehow sledges never sound quite so clever in the harsh light of day. I also read an interview with Herschelle Gibbs where he claims he never heard Steve Waugh say anything (he can be a bit of a mumbler sometimes). If that's the case, where did the myth come from in the first place?!
