Channel Nine to introduce new TV gadgets and gimmicks
After their successful Twenty20 coverage, Channel Nine plan to unveil a host of new gadgets and gimmicks to its cricket coverage. As well as using a mike and earpiece to talk directly to the fielding captain, they also plan to use infra-red technology to assist in deciding LBWs. Ray Chesterton at the Daily Telegraph has gone to town with all the new gadgetry:
"All we need now is Darth Vader bowling a yorker to Luke Skywalker while the umpire King Kong waits patiently at square leg to decide on a run out by flashing his light sabre."Personally, I'm not averse to modernising the game if the gimmick is appropriate. The idea of miking the captain has merit although not if it affects his ability to run the game. Channel Nine's other innovations are being kept underwraps which makes one wonder what they have up their sleeve. Some features I'd like to see:
- Slap a mike on known sledgers so we can get a continuous feed on their chirping. Listening to Andre Nel intimidating the batsman during one of his overs would certainly be more entertaining than Bill Lawry and Tony Greig droning on.
- They have stump-cam but how about helmet-cam? On the other hand, Jacques Kallis' helmet during a Brett Lee over would feature mostly sky.
- It seems a tough ask that the umpires have to watch the bowler's foot for no-ball infringements then snap their eyes up to the batsman to watch the delivery. Plus there seem to be a lot of no-ball errors from the umpires lately - calling them when they're not and vica versa. Why not solve both problems by using a no-ball laser similar to the lasers used in tennis line calls?
- Going on with the crease laser, what if a sensor is inserted between the stump and bail. Run out decisions can be decided instantly by syncing the crease laser with the stump sensor. Easy peasy!
- The purists complain about boundary ropes taking away the personality of a cricket ground by removing it's unique shape. However, they're mandatory due to player safety issues. Why not have the best of both worlds with inflatable boundaries. The whole ground would be like a big jumping castle, the players can safely slide into the boundaries and the kids can play on the ground during the lunch interval!

Is the 'player-comfort meter' still going? Wasn't there a 'weather wall' as well in the 80's as well? Bits of string and a plastic arrow I think... Me, I'm still marvelling at the action replay! Then came the slow motion replay and now the super slo-mo - how good is that!

Ah yes,the weather wall, I remember that from childhood. Lame as! Player comfort, what the hell was that?! I don't mind the super slow-mo depending on what they're showing. A spectacular bat-pad catch in super slow-mo = good. Shane Warne running his fingers through his hair in super slow-mo = very bad.

I especially love the way they play chanting monks or classical music over the super slow mo - as if it would make cricket all high brow all of a sudden.

What about a transmitter of some kind in the middle of the ball. You could then triangulate the signal and get an exact position on the ball at all times. Could be pushing the bounds of technology though!

AC DC = Alternative Cricket Digital Covers...
Welcome to a 21st Century Cricket, where bat and ball become ?Big Brother?
A new generation of electronic gadgets make the game faster and fantasy-sic.
Balls are developed to hold gyroscopic direct feedback, mapping their exact location to all camera?s keeping track of the ball at all times, with speed, location and spin.
Bats are finally updated to display ?cherries? exactly where the latest ball struck it.
Re-use of the skyCAM positioned behind the bowler providing Hawk-eye views.
Automatic Wicky, Laser creases, Mic?s on all players 6 & Out-of-the-ground rule.
Umpires are removed from the ground, with 3 Computer Aided Monitors. (CAM?s)
It?d be 3-D virtual simulated machine like cricket? wait on, this already exists?

I like the idea of a cricket ball with transmitter/gyro - combined with Hawk-eye, could give almost foolproof LBW decisions. Yeah, who needs umpires?!

I am not sure if this is what you are talking about, but one of the songs being used in the current ashes series is called 'Angelica', the artist is 'Lamb'. Does anyone know the name of the other one they use? There is only ever one word used in it, I think it says "California". Cheers.

Talking as a pom, where we have a lot of twenty20 cricket already. They already have some players wih microphones and the commentators all have chats with the fielding team about cricket and other random things. Its normally pretty entertaining to hear what they have to say. During the final day their is also the mascot race, where each counties' mascot races over an inflatable assault course.
Thought you'd enjoy knowing how we do it over here.

The rapid fire replays of multiple shots Channel Nine use between balls are driving me mad. It's impossible to tell when/if you're back live and the game is proceeding. Wouldn't it be nice ... and oh so easy to implement ... if there could be a moderately sized "R" (for replay) overlaid on the screen when the video feed is a replay?

the classic channel 9 cricket them is an old piece of comercial music originally written back i the late 70's. Nine has re-worked it about 6 times before coming back to a version much like the original. It has no name, only a catalogue number, but has been available on old "favorite tv show" type releases in the past. It was also the theme to the old Aussie TV cop show "Bluey". I hope that is the piece you mean, otherwise you're going to have to hum it to me.

1) The helmet cam wont go too well with batsmen complaining abaout extra weight on their heads. Also it is likely to be damaged,so I dont think that idea would go too far.
2) Also about that laser,it has to be placed outside the boundary to avoid damage, which means goodbye to your inflatable boundaries. Also its likely to be damaged anyway due to diving fielders or balls hitting it.
3)Also I'm not a great fan of using technology.Becauise if you want computers to do everything what do you need umpires for?To signal 4's and 6's?The human element is what adds a bit of unpredictability to the game.I can understand the other view which says a whole game may be decided by just one wrong decision, but the team that truly deserves to win is that which can fight back, whatever the situation. Also, personally, whenever I've played or watched the game bad decisions or bad luck has always evened out and the best team won in the end...some thoughts?(I dont think too many would agree with me!)

Ajesh, the unpredictability in cricket should come from the players, not the umpires. For umpires, we want them to be totally dull and predictable. In other words, correct every time.
Personally, I thought the system used in the Super Tests (wasn't that a long time ago) was perfect. The umpires had the option to go to the 3rd umpire on LBW decisions but could also rule themselves. That meant if they were dead certain it was out or not out, they decided then and there. If they were uncertain, they went to the 3rd umpire. This doesn't promote laziness in the umpires - if anything, it would sharpen them up. Most umpires *want* to be the one making the decision so they focus even harder to make sure that if they do rule, they're dead correct.

But JC,don't you think those 3rd umpire LBW decisions took the enthusiasm from the game? There's nothing like charging in,getting the batsman on the pads and getting the decision immediately, both as a player and a viewer.I can see your view too though. But if we have to review almost all decisions to the 3rd umpire(If I remember right most of the LBW's in the Super Test were referred)we don't need the on-field umpires anymore.Because you want to refer no balls, inside edge catches,99.9% of runouts, now LBW's,we can have 4 umpires inside an air conditioned room making all the calls if thats what you want. Also it will make a game of cricket even longer, and since the duration of one game is what turns many off from cricket,it doesn't look to bright for the future of cricket, atleast when viewership is concerned...
Posted by Ajesh Nag on 2007-05-04 17:39:02
Posted by Ajesh Nag on 2007-05-04 17:39:02
LBW decisions are always just an opinion, usually one based on eyesight, a knowledge of the laws of cricket, and experience.
I reckon using "technology" will promote laziness. You need only look at how often run outs are referred, even if the batsman is a metre or more out of his ground. Umpires don't even see a need to get into a position to best adjudicate. And I have grave doubts as to whether the present technology is good enough to give accurate lbw decisions. Would where the batsman takes strike, how far forward he is, was it a flipper, doosra, etc etc all be considered? Long way to go I think. LBW is a wonderful, often controversial, mode of dismissal; part of what makes the game great.
One vague area of a great game. Want a game full of vague areas and different interpretations every week?; follow the AFL.

Does anyone know the song that they play with the slo mo camera.. its like a monk singing it with a deep voice.. he says stuff like "doreme... doreme." over an over. then he sings all this other stuff.. it sounds like something thats would be on the lord of the rings before a battle starts..

I dont think that its any of the gregorian monk chants.. the song that is on the cricket slo mo is song by only one person, not militiple monks that chant.. and it sounds different to those gregorian monk chants.. it may not even be a chant.. im not sure.. all i no is that its song in a different language.. and it sounds cool.. he says words like doreme doreme etc..

Extend the 'ball tracker' from and off the bat too. Track it as it shapes off the bat, bouncing across the square.
