Ricky Ponting wins Allan Border medal

I must confess, I find the Allan Border Medal awards ceremony somewhat nauseating (and yet I cannot look away). I don't know whether it's the endless self congratulation, the glorification of our drinking culture or the parading of the trophy wives. Speaking of which, what is it with Australian cricketers and blonde babes? They all look like they walked off the set of Neighbours. More power to 'em, I guess. The notable exception was Shane Warne. It was kind of sweet how he came with his daughter. On the other hand, she's probably the only female in Australia that would be seen with him in public.

Ricky Ponting won the top award as expected. Not so expected was Mike Hussey almost taking it from him. Considering he missed the whole Ashes Test series, he could've easily taken the medal if he'd played a few more Tests (not to mention we could've retained the Ashes). For some reason, the Medal seems to favour newcomers if last year's award to Michael Clarke is anything to go by. Mike Hussey won the one day award with Andrew Symonds being disqualified after his drinking indiscretion in England. However, he seemed to receive more kudos than censure for his drinking with Doug Walter's amusing but sickening speech about Boony's drinking record. Warnie easily won the Test award. In fact, he did so well, he too almost took the Allan Border Medal without fronting for a single one day match. Does the tallying system even work?

The highlight of the evening was Phil Tufnell's long sledge of the Australians, gloating how England won the Ashes. I thought it was witty and had a good laugh but when they cut back to the Australians afterwards, they all had a look of murder in their eyes. Ricky Ponting gave Tufnell a bit of a spray in his acceptance speech. I don't know if the England cricket team will be thanking Tufnell for giving Australia that little extra bit of motivation. When Andrew Flintoff joked that Shoaib Akhtar looked like Tarzan, it gave Akhtar that extra motivation to take Pakistan to a series victory over England. Let's hope another loud mouth Pom will help precipitate an English defeat.
