England unveils giant statue of Shane Warne

What is it with England's infatuation with Shane Warne? During the Ashes, the Barmy Army serenaded him with "we wish you were English". British women are throwing themselves at him (although somewhat understandably - there's big money to be made in sleeping with Warne then selling the story to the tabloids). And now the Picadilly Circus has unveiled a huge statue of Warne. Here in Australia, the most trouble we ever went to was to produce a lifesize wax sculpture. However, to make sure it didn't go to his head, the Australian journalists made a point of making fun of Warnie's fat tummy at the press conference.

Hi this is the first i've heard about a statue in london, have they really built one?? If so I'm gonna have to get down there and have a look. I'm afraid I am one of those British women with an infatuation although I've had mine for 13 years! (I was hoping there might be a cure by now!!). Unfortunately I can't make any comment on his stamina or the trouser department as I am one of the remaining few who hasn't thrown herself at him, but I can say even as a 'Pom', he is the best spin bowler the world has seen (in my opinion)and I'm serioulsy hoping he does start saving some energy to play in the 2009 ashes so I get the chance to watch him in action again (so to speak!).

Didn't they hand a big picture of him in Lords too?

Hey since my comment on Shane Warne I've since seen the pictures of the 2 models and 'the inflatable toy' and I think that may well have been the cure I was after!! The thing is I've always followed cricket but started following Shane (I'm afarid he was gorgeous once!) and the boys (yes I know I'm British but we're not all members of the Barmey Army!!) in 1993 when I went to watch them in his 1st ashes tour over here at Headingly. I was blown away by what I saw (yes I mean the way they played thier cricket!) and I've been loyal to him and Australia (I do have some family over there so its not completely random and definately NOT band-wagon jumping!) ever since. In the early days being maybe the first female British Warne fan was nothing to be ashamed of at all, in fact I was really proud, but as the years have gone on I have to admit its getting harder and harder to defend my chosen hero, so nowadays I have to focus on the unbelievable bowling ability rather than the personality! Any way I've been lucky enough to be at each Ashes series and watch the greatest team in the world (sorry family and country!!) over here since but have never made it to OZ so finding this has been great as I can now keep upto date on the goings on on and off the pitch, yey!!

I saw the picture of Warne in his playboy undies and that was enough for me. I didn't even see the inflatable toy picture so thanks for the warning! I understand what you're saying - we're at the point now where as loyal cricket fans, we just have to block out his personal life and appreciate his genius as a legspinner. In fact, I've noticed the more his personal life goes down the crapper, the better he bowls as the last Ashes series showed. So it's not such a bad thing that he has such a wonky moral compass - if he'd remained a happily married man last year, we probably would've lost the Ashes 4-1 as Pietersen suggested!

4-1, yeah right! Good old KP, he hasn't got a clue.

You might've won more Tests if KP hadn't played - the guy dropped so many catches, in a series where so many Tests went down to the wire, who knows what might've happened if he'd held onto a few of them.

Yeah that would've been great if I'd wanted them to win in the first place??
