How Australia will win back the Ashes - Part 3
In our third post on how Australia will win back the Ashes, we look at the Aussie bowlers. Our ineffectual bowling attack were a large part of our 2005 Ashes loss. Glenn McGrath's injury, Jason Gillespie's loss of form - it was only Shane Warne's lion-hearted efforts that kept us in the contest at times. Can our bowlers keep it together this summer?
- Glenn McGrath: You can talk about the Oval Day 5 or those 2 runs at Edgbaston but Australia really lost the Ashes on the 1st morning of the 2nd Test. No, not when Ricky Ponting sent England in. Disaster struck when Glenn McGrath trod on a ball at warm-ups. I remember hearing the news and feeling a chill of premonition at the time - it was bad although I didn't anticipate how bad. So this summer, we just have to keep Pigeon fit and the urn should be ours. I suggest we employ a team of young children following and preceding McGrath at every warm-up to ensure no balls or other perilous objects find their way under his ageing feet. They could always borrow the children Shane Warne employs to sprinkle flower petals whereever he goes.
- Brett Lee: Another way Pakistan managed to beat England was to ship their key players back to England to be with their pregnant wives. Well, I doubt Pakistan caused the births but they were the beneficiaries. Only problem is this time around, it's Brett Lee whose wife is due to give birth around the time of the 1st Test. I'm thinking inducement on November 22 or set up a birthing clinic at the Gabba dressing rooms. Do it for your country, Mrs Lee!
- Shane Warne: It's amazing that after a decade and a half of Tests and county cricket, the English batsmen still have few answers in dealing with Warne. 2005 was one of his most prolific series, taking 40 wickets in 5 Tests. This was at a time when he suffered sex scandals, his marriage fell apart and he was separated from his children. Obviously, the more his life goes down the crapper, the better he seems to play. Perhaps if he reconciled with Simone and found contentment in domestic bliss, the edge might go from his bowling. So the Australian media need to take the lead from the English tabloids and keep a steady stream of hoax (or even better - genuine) scandals peppering the front pages until the series is won - just to eliminate any chance of a reconcilement.
- Third Seamer: This is the big question of the Australian bowling attack - who takes the 3rd seamer position? The two warm-up matches with NSW and SA will shed some light but currently the front-runners are Stuart Clark, Nathan Bracken, Mitchell Johnson and Jason Gillespie. For starters, forget Gillespie. This needs to be a selection not just for this summer but long term. I'd also write off Clark. Sure, he had a good tour of South Africa but why keep a pale imitation of Glenn McGrath in the side when you've got McGrath himself. Tait is interesting, particularly after a good Prime Minister's XI but he is basically just a raw pace strike weapon - we already have that in Brett Lee. It comes down to Bracken or Johnson. I'm with AB who says we should give Mitchell Johnson a go and not because I'm a Queenslander. I like the variety he offers our pace attack and the fact that he bowls quick. Hopefully under Troy Cooley's watchful eye, he'll develop a solid, wicket taking technique this summer.
- Shane Watson: While the buff Watson could be selected just on the basis of attracting more female demographic to the game, the question must be asked - is Watson the next Flintoff or just a big girly sook? I haven't seen such an injury prone hypochondriac since Shoaib Akhtar. This is the guy who was so scared of ghosts at Lumley Castle that he fled to Brett Lee's room, huddled in a foetal position on the floor afraid of the boo-boos. During the recent Champion's Trophy, slight chest pains had him rushing to hospital screaming 'heart attack'! He can dislocate a shoulder in a stiff breeze. Nevertheless, provided he doesn't pull a hammy between now and Thursday week, I'd have a punt on him as our #6 batsman and #4 bowler - give him 2 or 3 Tests to prove his mettle in the big leagues. After all, Andrew Symonds got a couple of Test series before the selectors realised he was a dud.
- Stuart MacGill: Well, who cares, he's not gonna be playing until Sydney where the series will most likely be already decided. Sorry, Gorilla!
And that sums up our plan in shaping a bowling attack capable of taking the 100 English wickets we'll need this summer. If you have any further ideas on how we can cane the Poms, be sure to post them here (I'm sure John Buchanan reads this blog daily for coaching ideas). Next installment, we look at how our batsmen can repel the English bowling attack.

While I'd usually post a sarky comment on how a well-placed bat might be useful in repelling our bowling attack, I won't this time.
Our seamers, led by Harmison, will do a perfectly good job in constructing a hefty score for Mr E X Tras. Similarly, Geraint Jones will do his best to drop any catches that may come to him, especially if they look too simple or if they're from a good batsman who is in single figures. Jones only takes the odd stunner, y'see.
As the previous commenter suggests, what are you guys down under worried about? ;)

It was complacency that lost us the Ashes last time around. England are looking a little scratchy at the moment and after Lords, I was starting to think it was business as usual when suddenly Edgbaston happened. So we're taking nothing for granted until the urn is ours.

Glenn McGrath: You can talk about the Oval Day 5 or those 2 runs at Edgbaston but Australia really lost the Ashes on the 1st morning of the 2nd Test. No, not when Ricky Ponting sent England in. Disaster struck when Glenn McGrath trod on a ball at warm-ups. I remember
