Mr Cricket spills on walking
After the controversial non-dismissal in Friday's game where he was given not out to a possible caught behind, Mike Hussey now explains why he doesn't walk. He's doesn't go so far as to say he actually nicked the ball (that would be rubbing it in) but merely quotes the party line for walkers: it's the umpire's job, the man in white is always right, yadda yadda. It's nothing we've never heard before and I find it a little strange that he sees the need to explain himself at all. The whole walking issue is a storm in a teacup. 99% of international batsmen (including I daresay the entire England batting line-up) don't walk. The only people who oppose non-walkers are the opposition when the decision goes against them... that is, until they're the beneficiary of a not-out decision.
In fact, the only batsman that does walk is the one I wish wouldn't. Adam Gilchrist once walked in an innings against Bangladesh when he actually didn't hit the ball - he mistook the impact of the bat on the ground for nicking the ball. Now that's just a crime against cricket in general. Gilly is hurtling towards retirement and I watch every one of his innings like a man stranded in a desert savouring every drop of an emptying water bottle. Morals... shmorals! Gilly should show some consideration towards his fans and realise any innings of his cut short is a tragedy!

And Gilly was actually given out recently after he hadn't walked!!
But for his walking caper, and unselfish batting, his Test average would be much higher.
But if it makes him sleep better at night...
Does this mean Gilly thinks Hussey is a cheat?

That's what I like fellas, let's manufacture some ill-feeling amongst the Aussie players and watch the solidarity disintegrate. More effective a means of beating Australia in the 'mind game' than any English tactic this summer!

Now, as for McMillan, well he definitely is a cheat!!! Who says I'm one-eyed?

After McMillan's not out McGrath said to the umpy "He smashed the shit out of it."

It looked like the finest of edges... the ball didn't change course in any way whatsoever. Hussey may not have even been 100% sure himself if he nicked it? I wouldn't have walked either, not from an edge like that.

Cricket is more than just a game, and more than just winning. Batsman should walk.

Gilly walks. I respect that. For him, it's about individual integrity. To Gilly, it seems, the umpire is a Judge, and like any judge, only needs to intervene when there is disagreement. To Gilly, players largely ought to be able to umpire themselves.
Hussey doesn't walk. I respect that, too. To Hussey, it seems, the umpire is an Archbishop and Hussey is but a supplicant to the cricketing fates. To Hussey, players need to accept the capriciousness of fate and put their faith in the decision of the umpire.

I was just kidding about that - someone posted a comment under the name Ricky Ponting, I replied jokingly then they replied again as if it was really Punter.

I think the umpires should walk if they think they got it wrong. Maybe we can have like a dozen umpies in reserve.

Maybe they should have a 2-strike challenge system like in the tennis? :)
