Monty Panesar's latest revelation - he likes cricket!
I penned this cartoon back before the Test series anticipating a stream of torrid Monty abuse from Aussie crowds. I'm pleased to see the abuse didn't eventuate (apart from that loser at the warm-up game) and Monty has been embraced by Australia. Much of it is due to his sheer exuberance as is evidenced in his latest diary entry.
"It really helps that I enjoy training. I see it as fun. I give it my best all the time and I want continue to do that. I'm heading straight back into the nets this week to get ready for the one-dayers, because I just get energy from playing cricket. I love the training, and talking to cricketers, and getting their views on cricket ... I just like cricket.Why shouldn't Monty be up-beat? While cooling his heels during the first 2 Tests, he took the opportunity to develop his own clothing range and signed an $800,000 book deal. He even recently won the 2006 Beard of the Year. It's interesting to compare the tone of his diary entries with Ashley Giles' diary. Monty radiates the enthusiasm of a wide-eyed puppy whereas Giles has the personality of Hitchhiker's Marvin the paranoid robot. Monty also received some sage advice from Kevin Pietersen:
"Kevin Pietersen was out in the middle when I arrived, and he gave me some useful advice. He was telling me to play straight and not try to sweep WarneYou'd know all about that, wouldn't you, Kev?
