Ponting & Gilchrist to miss Chappell Hadlee Trophy

The fact that Ponting and Gilchrist are to rested over the Chappell Hadlee Trophy takes on extra significance in light of their Friday finals defeat to England. Ponting is suffering from a medical condition that somehow allows him to play the Tri-Series finals yet not tour New Zealand. I think it's called Convenientitis. As for Gilchrist, no doubt Cricket Australia remember last summer when they coerced an unwilling Gilchrist to tour New Zealand and he scored 11 runs in 3 innings.

You can understand the long term view - our best players need to be fresh for the World Cup. Maybe they're also applying the handicap rule to Ricky Ponting giving someone else a chance to win the Allan Border Medal next time around. New Zealand will have mixed feelings, I'm sure. Australia resting two of their marquee players will cheapen the Chappell Hadlee Trophy, a series Australia have been talking up as one of the toughest rivalries in international cricket. On the other hand, considering the already exposed vulnerability of our batting line-up without Symonds, this could be the Black Cap's big chance to improve on their record of 2 wins from their last 22 matches against Australia.
