New Zealand rest Vettori and Bond
Now the series is decided, New Zealand have a chance to deliver a pointed backhander to Australia, resting Daniel Vettori and Shane Bond from the 3rd Chappell Hadlee match. The way players are dropping from the series, it reminds me of that Get Smart episode where Kaos and Control keep losing agents one by one until only Max and Siegfried are left. If this was a 5 game series, the final match would most likely be contested between recruits from local 2nd grade club sides.
To twist the barb, New Zealand have gone at great pains to stress that Vettori and Bond would've played if it was a live match. But seeing as the Black Caps have won the trophy, well, they'd rather put their feet up and watch Dr Phil. It's an amusing twist as Australia were widely criticised for resting Ponting and Gilchrist. Adam Gilchrist has gone so far as to say the Australian squad didn't want to tour New Zealand at all, accusing the powers that be of over-scheduling. It's only 3 years old but the Chappell Hadlee trophy has descended into farce - I wouldn't be surprised to see the annual event rescheduled to every 4 years.

I guess its only a successful backhander if NZ actually win. If they lose it becomes more of a backfire really.

Not really. Australia HAVE to win this match otherwise their humiliation is complete. If NZ lose, they can shrug their shoulders and say 'hey, we didn't even play our two best players'.

Well going by that theory we can also shrug our shoulders of the whole excursion to NZ with five key players out! Thats kind of my point - A good team should never do that. We have guys like Hodge, Haddin etc, who have been waiting a long time to play international cricket and when they get out there you can be sure they are playing their absolute best to win. We have a great depth of competitive players who will win matches for Australia when their experience colleagues are out of the side so thats why we can never shrug our shoulders.
shit I dont if that makes sense, hope you get what I mean :)

I can see the logic of what you're saying. I guess it's just a case of me being harder on my own team than on others. We should have no excuse for losing, particularly when Australia is always boasting about our depth of talent and the strength of our domestic competition.
