Australia vs India, 3rd Test, Day 1

Finally, some cricket! The contest I'm most anticipating, now that Shaun Tait is in the squad, will be Tait versus Sehwag. The nature of Tait's bowling is he either takes wickets or goes for runs. The nature of Sehwag's batting is he either gets out or scores fast runs. I'm hoping India bat first just to hurry up that confrontation.

I'd also like to see Harbhajan versus Ponting although ironically, it won't be an ICC suspension that sees him out of the side but the bouncy WACA pitch. Shame - I'd like to see how he tops the commando roll.

The least interesting aspect of this Test will be the level of scrutiny leveled at the umpires. Every questionable decision will be agonised over by endless TV replays. Hopefully, the only criticism of the umpires will be what a tool Billy Bowden is.

That's a great cartoon of Billy.

I'm suprised you aren't mining the current rich vein of material for more cartoons ie dummy spits, commando rolls, clown makeup.

I did have an idea of Kumble and Ponting sitting on a pschiatrist/counsellor couch complaining about each other like a married couple. But well, I lacked the time and motivation :-(
Posted by JC on 2008-01-16 12:35:32
Kumble wins the toss and bats. Not too long to wait for Sehwag vs Tait (that is unless Lee gets him out first).

Interested to see how Chris Rogers goes on his Test debut. Australia hasn't had many bespectacled cricketers. Good omen - Dirk Wellham wore glasses and made a hundred on debut (but not many more after that).

Any others you can think off ? Peter Taylor ?

Players from both teams are all shaking each others' hands, very sweet. I'd like to see some more bonding exercises - like that game where a guy falls backwards, trusting everyone else to catch him.
Posted by JC on 2008-01-16 13:23:07
Daniel Vettori's likes the specs.. can't think of any Baggy Green's though
Posted by Moses on 2008-01-16 13:25:32
Billy Bowden walks on the field tossing the ball and tipping his hat to the crowd like he's Shane Warne. What a tool! :-)
Posted by JC on 2008-01-16 13:29:38
India have made a decent start - looks like they will score 200...
Posted by Ace on 2008-01-16 14:17:38
Gee, that SS bat of Sehwag's looks like a nice blade - even the edges go for 4!
Posted by virtualgaz on 2008-01-16 14:19:04
Good to see India bat first - means Test will last atleast till Saturday....

Platform is set no excuse for middle order not to make runs...
Posted by Ace on 2008-01-16 14:37:09
CLive Lloyd wore specs on the field. Didn't affect his performances too much. Dutchy Holland wore corrective sunnies.

S Clark seems to be the only one waking up to how to bowl on a hard pitch. Keep it in the channel. Get it off the pads.

I stand corrected it was Murray Bennett.
Posted by jaradevans on 2008-01-16 14:39:32
In my record book the series is tied at 1-1 with India looking to take a lead here. The Aussie attack looks really insipid.

Could be time to unleash some Tit for Tat for Tait
Posted by Moses on 2008-01-16 15:06:10
keep that crap coming Varghese. 2 down now.

first ball - 150.8kph.. can't wait till his 3rd over when they start coming out quick

Spud should have done a Thommo and run through to the batsman and marked a cross on his forehead.
Posted by Hanuman on 2008-01-16 15:20:04
Tait is overhyped. Does not look even half as dangerous as Sreesanth.
Posted by Varghese on 2008-01-16 15:22:28
Run rate's a bit choked up now. 4 runs of 10 overs.
Posted by Hanuman on 2008-01-16 15:23:53
throw you down the other end Varg see if that's what you really think
Posted by jaradevans on 2008-01-16 15:25:18
I liked Australia's first appeal for a caught behind off Jaffer (ball hit the arm guard) - must've been the politest appeal from an Australian team since Bradman's era.
Posted by JC on 2008-01-16 15:34:38
U bet JC .. nice and polite .. thanks mate !!!

Tait's quick .. but let him set that radar of his in position first !!!
Posted by ghurram on 2008-01-16 15:42:33
Varghese - "Tait is overhyped. Does not look even half as dangerous as Sreesanth."

By definition Tait would be more dangerous than Sreesanth - Tait is the only one out of those two playing...
Posted by Andrew Mosey's Cousin on 2008-01-16 15:43:31
The only thing Sreesanth poses any danger to is the intelligence, good humour & enjoyment of any individual watching or taking part in a game that he's involved in...
Posted by Mike Hunt on 2008-01-16 15:44:47
Yes that is why Sreesanth took 21 wickets in 3 tests on fast bouncy wickets in South Africa. Had he not been injured he and Zaheer would not have let Australia cross 150 here.
Posted by Varghese on 2008-01-16 15:49:24
It's called tit for Tait, Andrew. Or Tait for tat. I forget which.

Shreesanth is a lunatic. Andre Nel with extra attitude.
Posted by Tony T on 2008-01-16 15:58:17
3-4 wickets an innings, that is devastating.

anyone got odds on Rick(y) being fined for slow over rate?
Posted by Moses on 2008-01-16 15:58:35
Thought you'd like that one Tony, bet we'll be seeing it on the after grog blog sooner rather than later..

geez .. u cant say that ... pauntin's been great .. its just an off day with the over rates .. temperatures soaring mate !!!
Posted by Ghurram on 2008-01-16 16:15:14
Funny how all these "threatening" quicks break down just before tours to Australia.
Posted by jaradevans on 2008-01-16 16:17:44
I'm sorry, what "fast bouncy wickets in South Africa" might these be? They're almost as slow as NZ wickets.
Posted by jaradevans on 2008-01-16 16:19:21
jaradevans: SA did prepare a seaming wicket in Joburg and a bouncy wicket in Durban. And most of our bowlers did really well there. Sreesanth is not Allan Donald but he is better than Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Tait and Ishant Sharma.
Posted by bunny on 2008-01-16 16:26:30
" Lee to Dravid, no run, oh Clarke's dropped it! Dravid goes fishing way outside off stump, gets a thick outside edge, very late into the shot as the ball comes onto him quickly, but Pup drops it at second slip, squeezing at it as he moves to his left and spills a sitter! "

Thank God -- he didnt claim for it !!!
Posted by Ghurram on 2008-01-16 16:31:12
The time that Tendulkar and Dravid have in playing Tait makes me think that they are playing a sclub class bowler. Such class batsmen. I shudder to think what will happen to Tait on subcontinental pitches. T
Posted by Varghese on 2008-01-16 16:51:26
you are joking varghese ... this fella on indian pitches .... and do u think they'd miss out a spinner there .... he wud be butchered .... so much after the so called 20-20 speed :D .. .read cricketnext ... lillee feels he can hit 170 ..... hahahahahahaha .....
Posted by Ghurram on 2008-01-16 16:56:12
bunny, seaming wickets are not fast bouncy wickets. I'm afraid you can't "prepare" a bouncy wicket, it's the nature of the surface itself. The wickets in SA are these days very similar to NZ wickets (having played on both surfaces over the past 10 years I can promise you this IS the case).
I'm also not getting into the playground "my dad's better than your dad" argument either. It's juvenile and bull****. Let their results do the talking.
Posted by jaradevans on 2008-01-16 16:59:57
Jaradevans: I agree one can't prepare a bouncy wicket. If at all it takes a lot of time. But the wicket in Durban was bouncy (way bouncier than WACA).

And if you look at their results you will see that Sreesanth is the best of the lot (although none of them have played enough test matches). And Sreesanth has got a deadly outswinger/leg cutter which none of the other possess.
Posted by bunny on 2008-01-16 17:05:18
Well said jaredevans. Pettyness is a sign of immaturity, insecurity and just stupidity.
Posted by Indian on 2008-01-16 17:07:37
Sorry, Mitchell Johnson can't swing and cut the ball? How did he take 4/11 against India then? the movement away from the right hander and bringing it in off the seam IS a left armer's cheif weapon (and one Johnson does have). I do like watching Sreesanth, however (barring the odd psychopathic episode) and would rather he was fit. I'd rather Australia play the best side India could produce, rather than 2nd and 3rd choice bowlers.
Posted by jaradevans on 2008-01-16 17:12:01
Jarad: Mitchell Johnson can swing and cut the ball but he needs helpful conditions (a bit like Irfan Pathan). In this tour he has been strictly 1-dimensional though. Just keep bowling way outside the off and hope that the batsman pokes at one. (Maybe that's what Ponting wants him to do. Keep it tight and bowl long spells).

Fair dinkum, how boring is ABC's commentary with out KOK???
Posted by virtualgaz on 2008-01-16 19:02:56
The aussie a**oles are appealing excessively again...putting the pressure on the umpires....and lo...he'z given Tendulkar out for a wron one...i donnot when the aussies start playing fair!!!
Posted by rk9 on 2008-01-16 19:07:46
Umpire gets Tendulkar. Poor umpiring is dogging this Indian team.
Posted by Varghese on 2008-01-16 19:08:21
I would say more than umpiring it is the aussies who are not playing fair and appealing excessively...there is no need for Lee to appeal for that Tendulkar ball. 2 balls earlier he appealed when the ball was going away and later he appealed when the ball was going above...this is how the aussies play...most of the LBWs the aussies appeal are not fair but their excessive appealing puts the pressure on the umpires....SHAME ON THE AUSSIE PLAYERS!!!
Posted by rk9 on 2008-01-16 19:16:08
Oh come on now .... please leave the LBW's atleast ... I dont guess we need to whine for everything .. these things even out ... nothin to worry much about !!!
Posted by Ghurram on 2008-01-16 19:16:57
This not whining Ghurram dude...these might even out eventually but a player like Tendulkar...it is hard to compare...and why would this happen with only Indian team...and Sachin Tendulkar is robbed of yet another century! LBWs should go with a benefit to the batsmen but looks like when a team plays against the aussies...it goes for the aussies.

Shaun Tait - 9-1-47-0

This is high time Tait reduces his speed from 150Kmph to 130 Kmph otherwise ball will run too fast towards boundary line and we can't even enjoy it....

Oh come on now .... please leave the LBW's atleast ... I dont guess we need to whine for everything .. these things even out ... nothin to worry much about !!! - Ghurram

The land is so uneven as of now that our back is breaking due to bumpy ride!!!
Posted by No Argument on 2008-01-16 19:32:56
Oh come on mate rk9 ... I hav as always supported the idea of removing LBW's out of debate ... Sachin got a century in Sydney inspite of palpably being in front of the wicket ... we can't have such short memories right ??

And dude, me a greater supporter of Indian Cricket ... and it sounds odd to make a mountain of a mole each and every time these things happen !!!!
Posted by Ghurram on 2008-01-16 19:33:47
India 1st Innings - 425
Australia 1st Innings - 350
India 2nd Innings - 275
Australia 2nd Innings - 175

INDIA WINS BY 175 RUNS......AND THE SERIES WOULD BE 2-1 IN INDIA'S FAVOUR...OOPS!!! IT'S 2-0 NOW NOT 1-1, I FORGOT!!!

Two effigies please, I'll have a Rauf and a Bowden thanks.
Posted by Hanuman on 2008-01-16 19:43:32
I might do another "simulated Test" at the end of this one, factoring in dodgy umpiring decisions. Two clear errors IMHO:

Tendulkar erroneously given LBW 71

Dravid erroneously given LBW reprieve on 67 (we'll see how many runs it costs Australia)
Posted by JC on 2008-01-16 19:44:42
the simulation would go ahead and say that tendulkar shud not get ne more runs coz his average is less ... no issue with the form he was in when he was playin ...

JC ... lets move on mate ......

Roebuck's in super-suck-up Mr. Nicety mode today... feeling a bit guilty/silly perhaps???
Posted by virtualgaz on 2008-01-16 19:52:22
Ghurram, it's become a statistical compulsion for me (being a statistical geek). How I work out how many runs India lost from the umpiring decision - Tendulkar got to 71. According to StatsGuru, Tendulkar averages 124 runs per innings whenever he reaches 71. So India lost 53 runs from the LBW decision :-)
Posted by JC on 2008-01-16 19:55:59
hmmm .... good to see all that .... let me join in the fun then :-)

It wud have been gr8 if I had an option to change my name every time I scrapped here .... somethin to JC's friend at this point ...

Looks like the others are out ... I mean those who whined .. coz they have seen this :D
Posted by Ghurram on 2008-01-16 19:58:06
Okay, What is a good score on this track. A winning one. Should 400 be good enough for India, keeping in mind that Hayden is not there and Ponting is as good as not there.

As far as LBW is concerned, I think the umpire are best judge of it. Fielders will always appeal. Nothin wrong in it.
Posted by ssukhdial on 2008-01-16 20:02:21
JC ... stats please !!!
Posted by Ghurram on 2008-01-16 20:35:27
Well, it's not gonna be a ball-by-ball update but Dravid out for 93 means his dodgy LBW reprieve cost Australia 22 runs - Tendulkar's LBW cost India 53 runs. India - 31 runs behind on UmpWatch.
Posted by JC on 2008-01-16 20:48:45
My wife has selective deafness. Indian supporters have selective blindness. Tendulkar got a bad one but was plumb to Symonds when on 49. Anyway, that's done and dusted.
What the hell was wrong with Tait? Bowling at half rat power he might as well have stayed at home.
But if Lee is not now the premier quick in the world I'll eat...
Game evenly poised don't ya reckon.
Posted by Dan Tas on 2008-01-16 21:24:45
JC: I think you should only really count those scores where SRT made 71+ and in those innings he averages 153. So it cost India 82 and Dravid's reprieve cost Australia 22. So we are 60 runs behind.
Posted by bunny on 2008-01-16 21:25:53
JC: Although I think the umpiring was pretty good today. Can't really complain about lbws unless it's an absolute shocker.
Posted by bunny on 2008-01-16 21:29:02
INDIA WILL WIN THIS TEST MATCH........
Posted by No Argument on 2008-01-16 21:31:53
bunny, agreed, umpiring was pretty good - only a few iffy LBWs which you can't really complain about. How I work out Tendulkar's "virtual average" is the average per innings as there are 12 not outs in his innings over 71 runs, inflating the batting average.
Posted by JC on 2008-01-16 22:15:08
JC, not really sure why you're counting Tendulkar? If you are going to include LBW's then he was out on 49. It looked out to the naked eye and Hawkeye confirmed it. So by your Calc's that would make Australia 22+22=44 run behind where they should be at the start of day 2.
Posted by PhotoHog on 2008-01-16 22:40:57
You got to love how when the decisions have been going against Australia all day, one against Dravid and Tendulkar you still get the idiots who whinge that India were "robbed".

It is kind of pathetic...

At the end of the day bad umpiring decisions "could" cost a team a game, but they happen all the time, but you won't see Australians burning effigys.
Posted by Andrew on 2008-01-16 22:53:51
Weaving away from the boiling topic .... just a guess.

Who would be Kumble's 600 ??

My guess -- Hussey .... whats yours ?
Posted by Ghurram on 2008-01-16 23:29:37
Tait's been making all the wrong noises.I hate it when I see a newcomer procaliming that he wants to bowl faster than Shoaib and break his 100 mph bouncer.Just not a good omen!Thats a stupid aspiration.
Posted by Gaurav on 2008-01-16 23:45:00
Andrew: I think the umpiring was pretty good. There were a lot of close shouts which were rightly given not out but Dravid was plumb in front and Tendulkar should not have been given out (considering the bounce) but if they maintain such standards I will be more than happy.
Posted by bunny on 2008-01-16 23:45:48
Shaun Tait will soon break Shoaib Akhtar's record... but he would need two wicketkeepers beside the stumps...sorry far away from the stumps...one on the first slip and the other on thirdman
Posted by No Argument on 2008-01-16 23:51:35
Photohog, I missed that Tendulkar reprieve on 49 - thanx!
Posted by JC on 2008-01-17 00:18:39
The spirit and umpiring in this test has been good so far.
I agree with JC assessment that India are slightly ahead on UMPH factor on day one.
Posted by Tail Spin on 2008-01-17 01:10:21
Tendulkar was snookered by excessive dramatic appeal by Lee that pressurized Rauf on consecutive deliveries...

Just for the record on APPEALS.

Yes he would have been out at 49 earlier.
Posted by Tail Spin on 2008-01-17 01:34:15
Hello guyz whoever is complaining that Tendulkar got a reprieve on 49...it is b**s**t. If you have watched it in hawkeye, the ball was going over the top...and usually benefit of doubt is given in batsmen's favor. What do you guyz say about excessive aussie APPEALING...it is not in the right spirit of the game...the excessive appealing by Lee forced Rauf to give Tendulkar out LBW. Unless the aussie mentality change...it is not right to play against these aussie cheats!!! I am sorry for writing this...but just think about it!
Posted by rk9 on 2008-01-17 05:35:26
JC: Just wondering what the difference is in your simulations between players' overall averages in innings over a certain score and players' overall averages in innings over a certain score AGAINST AUSTRALIA?
Posted by TA on 2008-01-17 09:25:12
Excessive appealing - cheating. Again, if it is a line-ball decision in the umpires mind then a good/strong appeal may get you over the line, but if it's not out in his eyes then it's not out. This excessive appealing/pressurising umpires crap you continue to drag out is a laugh. If we were found to be excessively appealing for slim chances in this match then wait for the announcement of penalties/fines - nothing so far.
Toughen up, saw a couple of nice lb chances on Dravid go begging, one from Johnson that was absolutely plum - but you don't see me down at Bunnings buying bits for an effigy. In this days play they evened out.
Posted by Mike Hunt on 2008-01-17 10:08:19
rk9, HTFU. If it looks like it might be given then appeal. Get over it.
Posted by Moses on 2008-01-17 12:56:18
Mike can you get effigy's in Bunnings now, wow they really do stock everything. Then again being a multi-cultural nation the local Indian supporters have to get them from somewhere.

Looking forward to seeing the Indian's not "excessively appeals". According to their fans the Indians will only appeal once for each wicket...
