Perth - the anti-Sydney
So it turns out umpiring errors do even out. Well, it doesn't happen overnight but it did happen. Day 4 WACA turned out like an anti-Day 5 Sydney. The losing side faced a tough 4th innings struggle. They were dudded with crucial umpiring errors. As they crawled towards the finish line, a part time off-spinner decimated the late order. This time, however, it was Australia on the losing side.
Opponents complain Australia too often get the rub of the umpiring green. But Perth demonstrated it's not Australia's opponents that get bad umpiring decisions - it's the struggling team. The dominant side creates opportunities, close LBW shouts, plays and misses and near nicks. Inevitably some decisions go their way. So more power to India for dominating Australia.
The contest between Sharma and Ponting was the highlight of the match with Sharma winning in the last over of his 9 over spell. It even bettered the splendid contest between Lee and Tendulkar on Day 3 (again won by the bowler). If Harbhajan and Sharma play in Adelaide, it'll be fun watching the two fall over in the rush to bowl at the Australian captain.
Now Australians often get philosophical after a defeat, choosing to emphasise that our defeat was "good for cricket". This is one step away from that old chestnut: "cricket was the winner". Nevertheless, I confess I revelled in some hard fought, old fashioned Test cricket on Day 4. The bowlers moved the ball through the air and off the pitch, the batsmen grafted while sweating on the odd loose delivery and each session saw the balance of power shift one way or the other. If India win in Adelaide, I say we scrap the one day series and schedule a 5th Test.

Thank goodness noone is whining about the umpiring again. Good points you make there JC.
And I also agree in that we play too many pointless ODI's.
In my opinion the 7 match series last September-October in India was a complete waste of time and only a money making excercise..
Also the CB series which consists of 400 odd One Dayers and 3 finals is the worst way to spend the cricketing summer.
But at the end of the day, "The buck is mightier than the bat", I guess..

Also as long as the losing team isn't India the umpires get to keep their job...
I am sure the Indian fans, this time will be more understanding of umpire erros, and not call the team "appealing" cheats.
Good game though, impressive batting from Johnson, I wonder if he will get to move up the batting order and replace Lee.

there was a single bad decision that of symonds( what an irony ). at least rauf was consistent in his lbw's with sachin and msd getting the stick in india's first innings and hussey getting one is last innnngs. and if you have analysed sydney with an unbiased look it was like a 10-2 in favor of australia.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul made an interesting point: "If the umpires don't rule all the 50-50 decisions, or even some of the 40-60 ones, in Australia's favour, most of the Test teams can beat them,"

Australia got one bad (Symonds) and two questionable (Hussey & slowmo Ponting) bad decisions to India's Two bad (Tendulkar, Dhoni)
one questionable (Dravid Snicko)
These are comparable but Australian decisions came at a very bad time and hurt them much more. They also came one following the other leaving one exasperated.
Sydney & Perth are not comparable .. .whatever spin one puts on it.
A team and its followers ... broad minded and effigy burning kind... do not lose faith that often.
It was pathetic. It has to be said.

On day 3 when Dravid came out to bat got a nick to the keeper, nobody had a doubt about the decision. There were clearly two sounds. However the snicko suggested that there is a doubt and the bat would have hit the pad and not the ball. My suggestion to Dravid here is to deal with that silly technique of 50-50. Either bring the full face or leave it to the keeper. Somewhere in between won't work. He will continue to get these bad decisions. Coming to the commentators, Mark Nicholas created the initial doubt while analyzing snicko but then later on(after the over) went on to say that "we actually did hear the nick and it was a fare decision". I had a laugh of my life. Unless he is sarcastic to his manager, he sounded like he was too sorry about creating the doubt. Somebody gave him a big bashing during that break.

There weren't half as many shocking decisions here than at the SCG. Okay that Hussey one was a shocker but even Tendulkar was given out that way. Ponting got a life or two against Sharma. Even Ian Chappell felt he was out. Symonds was unlucky but it evened out after Sydney. Where Australia really lost the match was in the first innings, where the batsmen played some really wild shots, something not normally shown by the Aussie batsmen.

sunny gavaskar was supposed to be joking when he was talking about the symonds decision in the 2nd innings and he was saying it was the bat who sent the big man to the dressing room.he said that the bat created some noise but its decibel was not enough to bother the umpires in the last test but this time the bat dint make enough noise to get the umpires attention.

JC you got it completely wrong.
No way can Sydney be compared to Perth.
Are you trying to tell me, pre-Sydneygate, there were no umpiring errors or instances of India losing due to rough decisions?
Kumble is playing international cricket for 17 years, Sachin for 19 years, Dravid and Ganguly for 12 years, Laxman for 11 years and so on.
Isn't it a pretty long period to understand that umpiring mistakes even out in the long run?
They all have had their share of fortunes and misfortunes. Just like what happened in Perth. Symonds' way of dismissal was long due.
Hussey was given out the same way Dhoni and Sachin were. Evens stevens. Such things happen in every cricket match. It can't be avoided.
But what happened in Sydney was aptly described be Malcom Speed as an "extraordinary situation". Umpire Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson had not hold over the game. Bucknor looked like guessing everytime trying to draw a conclusion from the batsman's body language and the conviction of the appeal. It's easy to fool such a man. Eventually India got 8 extremely bad decisions and Australia 2. Since when do we have 8 bad decisions against one team considered as normal?
In Perth India dominated Australia on the first 2 days and outplayed them on day 3.
In Sydney India almost finished off Australia on day 1 only to be betrayed by the umpires. Still India went on to dominate on day 2 and 3. Only Day 4 belonged to Australia and what happened on day 5 is no secret.
I see no comparison here. Only thing that can be concluded is that India dominated Australia on 7 out of last 9 days of test match cricket.

It is preposterous to suggest that umpiring had anything to do with this Indian victory. Sydney was unprecedented in the history of Test cricket. 12 decisions went against India and one against Australia.
At Perth eight decisons were contentious still favouring Aussies but not too lopsided.
Ist Innings
Tendulkar
Dhoni
Pathan
Australia
Rogers
2nd Innings
India
Ponting was plumb LBW twice to Ishant - not given
Hussey was plumb LBW - not given
Australia
Symonds - wrongly given LBW
Hussey - LBW (but most commnetators were saying that when Tendulkar was given out it would have been double standards if Hussey was not given).
Asad Rauf and Billy Bowden gave quite a few LBW but atleast he was consistent with his decisions. Bucknor looked as if he had a score to settle against India.
So again India showed that even when the odds were against them, they can win provided it is not too one sided like in Sydney.

JC - You were on the spot, except for the first para where you were completely wrong.
In Sydney, 8 out of 11 bad decisions went against India.
In Perth, 1 bad decision (Symonds) and one 50-50 decision (Ponting's no-ball) went against Australia.
I would cancel out Hussey's over-the-stump lbw against Sachin's dismissal, though Hussey's appeared out to the naked eye (umpires dont have the benefit of hawk-eye)... since Sachin was jumping in the air when it struck his knee roll...
So, sorry JC, Sydney cannot be equal to Perth by any means.
The wrong decisions in Perth is what you normally see in any Test match today. Since it came after the infamous Sydney test, there are a lot of unnecessary emotions amongst Ozzies here.
If the Sydney fiasco never happened, nobody will be talking about the Perth decisions, sine they are completely ordinary and commonplace.
Messrs Bucknor and Benson institutionalised 'bad umpiring' in Sydney.
But, but... I dont blame the Ozzie team for Bucknor-benson's mistakes. I dont think and dont believe for sure, that Aussies manipulated and sought out the bad decisions from the umpires. It is just that the eminent umpires broke down very badly in Sydney.. and it suited the Ozzies...
Like you so rightly said, the struggling team gets the bad decisions... and the mighty Ponting & Co definitely struggled in Perth.
In every win by India against Australia, there is always a "but" and "if" factor. Last time when India played in Aus in 2003, McGra did not play. This time around, Hayden did not play..
And, Hayden has never ever been mastered by Indian bowlers. Well yes, finally we conclusively conquered Ponting in this series (first by Bhajji and now by Ishant Sharma).. but Hayden remains a thorn, just as McGra did.
Cheers

Emotion isn't that bad a weapon.
Fear is the alien emotion that Ponting will feel come Thursday.
He can not afford to lose in Adelaide and although he knows fear is counterproductive... it isn't something he can do much about.
Imagine the reaction if India were to win in Adelaide. While Australia get to keep the Trophy...India will walk away with a huge moral victory.
They asked him to resign after the 16th win. It will be his scalp now.
Ricky don't lose that number...( HELPLINE)

Hellooo MrJC and the aussie followers...i dont know when the heck u wud come out of ur singlemindedness. So you say "when australia looses, it is bad umpiring decisions and when india looses it human error in umpiring which is ok." This is b**s**t. You know about it. You a**oles come out of ur aussie biasism. Agree that aussies are not that good. It is a pity that aussies are leading by 2-1 instead it should have been india leading by 2-1. All u aussie supporters know about it but u still whine!!! This blog is bloody aussie biased...stay tuned and I will give u links to some good blogs where cricket is discussed unbiased.

Looks like it will again be hard to have a reasonable conversation with most of the Indian cricket fans who grace us with their presence on this website. I am going to avoid all of the noxious banter and simply remind everyone that you were predominantly whinging your guts out in the Sydney test because of the bad umpiring ON THE LAST DAY. Australian fans also have plenty of cause for complaint on the last days play in Perth where the crappy umpiring decisions were probably worth about 70 or 80 runs. The reason why you won't hear Australian's complaining about this is because we know the Indians had a hard run in Sydney and because there are other more urgent issues (Tait, and 'the spinner', Punter's poor form (relatively speaking), and the absence of Hayden). It seemed to me watching the rants on this site that all Indian fans did was bitch and moan after the Second Test (while the BCCI secretly followed the advice of Australian experts and played both Sehwag and Sharma while dropping Singh). If India had of dropped Jaffer like most Aussie fans suggested you might have then you might have won by an even bigger margin. I tell you what, the majority of Indian fans on this website really are in line for the "Bitcher and Moaner of the Year Award." I suggest we hold this after the series JC. The biggest sook.

TA
We haven't WON the series yet...
Lets make sure of it in Adelaide
This attitude is what contributed to us losing in Perth
We underestimate India at our peril mate..
The umpiring was not an issue for me - Pup should have got a hundred and had more faith in the tail...
He will learn and I rekon him and Mitch could have taken us pretty close if he had kept his head...
We all know India crumble when under pressure, and when we counter-attack...
Bring on Adelaide - where I think a draw or us winning are the most viable results especially if we win the toss..
TA then we can say we have won the series and the Indians have lost...
BTW my girlfriend was watching an Indian movie last night and these two boys in a village were scolded by their mother in Hindi - the English subtitles were "Don't behave like m***keys"
Made me crack up ;)

This is one potential scenario...
Australia bats first makes 450+
Haydos makes a hundred...
India cracks under the pressure and is bowled out for 250 ish (Tendulkar making a 100)
Australia bats again make a quick 300
India need 500+ to win - again they crumble under pressure and lose by 300+

Ace, This scenario is possibly the script of Brett Lee's next bollywood movie, this is not what is going to happen on the ground...My possible scenario is
India bats and makes 350
Australia scores 260-270
India scores 280
Australia bowled out within 200

That is extremely ambitious...
When was the last time Australia was bowled out at home for less than 300 in both innings?
The only way you guys have any chance of winning the game is batting first and making 500+
If you dont bat first you cant win - it is as simple as that...
Adelaide is too good a batting wicket to see us get bowled out twice for under 300...
Adelaide is generally a batsmans paradise...

Also I'm totally against the selectors move to drop Sourav Ganguly.
He maybe old, slow, lazy and even dreamy eyed under those shades at times, but dear selectors, he was India's 3rd highest rungetter last year and to drop him in the name of "phasing out" experienced players is plain naive.
We shouldn't drop old players for the sake, else half this Australian team wouldn't have been around to win so many matches.
Players like Ganguly have done a lot for the team and to drop him when he is still playing well, come to think of it, is quite stupid actually...

Can someone explain this vendetta that everyone seems to have against Sourav Ganguly?
Also, where was the Skull? I have had it up to here with Roebuck and don't even talk to me about Mark no idea Nicholas. Bring back the Skull.

as far as adelaide is concerned,,, i think sehwag is gonna was his tail a bit too long.. if he gets going in the first innings its very rare that india losses. barring the melbourne 2003.
Incidentally india happens to be the last team in 2003 and after that till 2008 it was india again to defeat australia in australia . Gosh what a team has australia been , thats what the brand and intensity of cricket those guys are playing with ,, if only they are a more disciplined in the field and avoid cheating...my only worry if australians keep sledging a bit too much then it might loose its sheen become like the stephen flemming led new zealand ,,,where he only used to talk and talk during press and on the field but no result would be produced....am sure aussies are much more superior though....
currently indians are the favourite to win the adelaide test...
