Australia v India - 4th Test, Day 1
4th Test is about to start, and India can still draw the series by winning here. A draw or the start of another Aussie streak will give the series to the home team. Cloudy with some light rain, clearing during the morning. Increasing sunny periods in the afternoon. Scheduled start is 11:30am local (11:00am AEDST). Live coverage is available here.

Of course we'll bat - Punter has always batted ever since the debacle of Edgbaston 2005 but even more so on Adelaide.

Never mind, India win the toss and surprise, surprise, bat! Lucky for them too - choosing two spinners who now get a 4th innings crack at the Aussies

That's if we need a 4th innings, they've dropped Jaffer for Singh so are playing 5 bowlers!
Not sure if they realise but you can only use one at a time...

Pathan is going to open! I suppose he did well as a night watchman and I've heard he can bat a bit... but Test opener? Well, I suppose Anil knows best...

What do we have to lose to get a decent bet on the Aussies?
Posted by Moses on 2008-01-24 11:23:06
Straya $1.85
Draw $2.50
India $7.00

Damn, 2 sloggers in Pathan and V. Slog...Bound to be a few quick wickets for Punter...what are the betting odds now $12:1 or so...Who's gonna get a 5 for Lee or Clark? I predict 4 Lee, 2 Clark, 2 John, 1 Hogg

I really hope to eat humble pie later, but I'm shocked that we're going to open with Pathan. It's one thing showing some grit as a night watchman and completely another opening the batting against Australia on Day One of an incredibly important Test match at Adelaide.

Pathan is playing well. Kumble has picked his cards well. 33/0 at the moment. If this pair can put on another 40+ , then the plans of KUmble is working well.

"Sehwag sure has an intimidating effect on the Aussies. I like the way he makes them try that extra bit and err in doing so. Invariably, by the time he's done, he always takes them for quite a few runs," says Sunil.
India needs Sehwag at crease at least for 2 sessions. Often he gets intimidated by his play, and gets out.

I don't reckon the openning of Pathan worked. At 9 runs for 21 balls, its hardly an impressive start. While I understand the idea (that Dravid sucks at openning) I think Pathan would have been more dangerous being able to swing his bat freely later in the innings.

Yeah, Pathan's getting over-hyped IMHO. Kids got passion and guts, but can't let that get to the head at any stage. On the bright side, if there is one, Jaffer would'nt have done any better..

I heard a good theory on the radio the other day.. send out Sehwag and Jaffer while Dravid is distracted then have Jaffer walk back into the dressing room with his tail between his legs.
If Dravid thinks he's coming in at 3 he'll play well, just don't tell him he's opening.

Johnson to Dravid, OUT, caught! Dravid fends at one that pitches around off stump and slants across the right-hander, Dravid fends timidly at it, looking to defend, and the outside edge goes straight to Ponting at second slip for the easiest of catches
R Dravid c Ponting b Johnson 18 (55b 0x4 0x6) SR: 32.72
2/89 at Lunch, with Dravid going at the end (albeit plumb lbw earlier) I'd say honours go marginally to Australia for the session.
In Adelaide you're looking at 500 as a benchmark for first innings, India only scoring 89 in the session despite a flying start from Sehwag.
If we can get 3 more wickets next session I'll be very happy.

Jaffer had to go, after scores of 4, 15, 3, 0, 16, 11 they really had to stick someone else up there. I think they should have gone for a specialist opener though, surely there's another one in the squad?

89/2...Not good and not bad. Next session holds very crucial. Sehwag and Sachin should play cautiously. If the partnership can add around 75 runs, a good platform is set for bigger scores. Sehwag is a big thorn for Aussies now. If they dont get him now, he is going to dominate the bowlers and score will roar at rapid pace.
Waiting for next session.

Johnson to Sehwag, no run, loud shout for lbw but Rauf says not out, it pitched on middle and held it's line across the right-hander, Sehwag defended off the front foot but played down the wrong line, that might have just missed off stump with the angle across the right-hander, extremely close call, replays show it hitting off stumpSounds like India's second piece of luck, and Rauf's second dodgy call.

31.6 Hogg to Tendulkar, no run, caught! No it fell short! Tendulkar went back to cut Hogg and couldn't keep it down, he hit it in the air towards backward point where Clarke dived forward to try and take the catch, it bounced just in front of himLucky mofo!

41.6 Hogg to Ganguly, OUT, a loud long appeal from Hogg and Rauf raises the finger after a long think, Ganguly got a long stride forward and tried to sweep, he was hit just in line of off stump but he was a long way forward, that's the fourth time Hogg has dismissed him in the seriesAnyone see this? Sounds a long way forward. Rauf is a joke, can you Indians get him dropped please?

63.3 Lee to Laxman, no run, Gilchrist drops a sitter! Laxman poked his bat out at one outside the off stump and a healthy edge flew through at a comfortable height for Gilchrist who moved to his right to take the catch, it popped in and popped right out, Hayden looks bewildered at first slip, the crowd lets out a loud groanAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Sometimes I feel Pontings captaincy lacks a bit of imagination. If things are going well its hunky dory, but when the chips are down I always get the feeling he runs out of ideas, especially in ODI's and esp. in T20's.
Let's see if Tendulkar can get his name on one of those steps in front of the pavillion tomorrow, one of the biggest days of his career beckons...

Also can you guys tell me about the spin talent in Australia?
Brad Hogg shouldn't last beyond this series, Stuart Macgill is way past his best bowling 3 good balls and 3 shockers to follow.
I know Dan Cullen is contracted and also heard about a leggie called Cullen Bailey.
What on earth happened to Nathan Hauritz, touted as "The future of Australian spin" when he made his debut in 2004 at the age of 18 or thereabouts?
Have these guys not done enough to get into the national team?
Warne's boots are looking too big to fill at the moment, not only re spin, but even for Matthew Hayden at first slip!

Guys Ponting is too good to be a bunny for bhajji or some1 else .... somehow he is not comfotable at the moment but this match means a lot for him .. so expect something special ... and then there is always Hyden up against India. So game is nowhere close to India at the moment. Lets see how much remaining 5 are going to put on the board.

For me Pathan gets rid of Hayden below 10, and aussie will go down around 200, and Indie got the match.

Hoggy did not send him a picture. Purush makes it sound very rude.
The story goes, Hoggy requested Tendulkar to autograph this photo(the one he had Tendulkar bowled in India, while trying to play a cut shot).
Tendulkar apparently signed it, "It wont happen again Hoggy - S. Tendulkar"
I read this story after the Oneday series in India.
It only shows that they are friends once the game is over and Brad's awe of Tendulkar.(and Humility)
I dont think there is any Malice in the whole episode.
It could be one of those Myths(Like Steve Waugh and Gibbs)

I agree with Day Two. It shows Hogg's humility and sachin didn't mean probably that he won't get out in Hogg's delivery. What he meant is he won't get out trying the same shot again.

LOL, I love the idea of Panesar asking Tendulkar to autograph a photo of getting him out. Wonder how much that would go for on Ebay :-)

Very evenly poised game...
First session is key if Dhoni, Kumble and Harb show some stick ability they could get 450 if Sachin cuts lose....
He batted well with tail in Sydney...
This game is open if India bowl well - A lot of Indians are taking this for granted, picking 5 bowlers doesnt mean you can afford to just turn up and you will win...
Lets see how it unfolds looking forward to it...
This has been the best series in ages down under...
Hopefully Pakistan and the Windies can get some confidence and the Safricans later this year and give us a memorable year of closely fought test cricket...
We need to transition Gilly out of the team - he is a keeper first and then a batsmen, I rekon he is the greatest keeper batsmen of all time, but his time seems to be near...
You can't drop sitters like he did in the last few tests even Dhoni has looked better than him behind the stumps.

Ajesh Nag, I reckon the defensive fields to Sehwag were probably a plan.
I've often thought with agressive batsman like Sehwag if you dry up the boundaries they'll get frustrated and do something stupid.

Iam expecting another 40 Runs from tail enders. Which will make Indian total around 440. I think they will be short of 100 Runs, if they are thinking of winning.

Moses - You are right.. Sachin rarely scores well in the 2nd innings.. but as long as his first inning scores are good enuf.. India should do well, as there are 3-4 other top batsmen in the team.
But, prior to this innings, in the 3 Tests he has played at Adelaide Oval, his average was a paltry 20 !!!!, with an aggregate of 122 !!
(In fact, his bowling has been better at the Ade Oval.. He has taken 4 wickets in 3 tests! Not bad for a batsman..)
So, a guy who has been bad on this ground and yet applies himself to score a 150+ deserves all the applause, which the Aus crowd so gracefully gave,.. a standing ovation!
Cheers

Both Kumble and Bhajji nearing 50, holding their nerves. Well done.
