Australia vs India, 2nd Test, Day 4

Australian cricket fans crave a contest. We'll never knock back a win but we prefer a tight contest. The catch 22 is a tight game exposes the possibility that we might lose. In a perfect world, I'd like to have my cake and eat it too - a seesawing Test with Australia always winning late in the last session of the 5th day. I don't think that's too much to ask.

And so Australia began the second innings in arrears. The last time I remember this happening was in Sri Lanka - in three consecutive Tests. Of course we went on to win all 3 Tests but in this case, time is our enemy. With only two days left, does Australia have enough time to set a target then dismiss the strong Indian batting line-up? Am I even getting ahead of myself - what if the Australian batting line-up isn't reprieved by dodgy umpiring decisions and we're dismissed cheaply. And there's the spectre of rain chewing up valuable playing time. Australia will play for a victory so the next two days should be enthralling Test cricket.

Punter's Harba's bunny!

Punter gone. Time for an innings of character. I hope it's Hussey.
Posted by TA on 2008-01-05 12:29:53
Indeed, Punter almost didn't take an easy single cause he didn't want to face Harbhajan who got him first ball! One thing I will say though - cricketers just don't know how to celebrate wickets like soccer players celebrate goals. You've got Brett Lee's chain saw. Andrew Flintoff's gladiator pose. And now we have Harbhajan's double somersault.

i think bajji attempted a robbie keane
Posted by vishnu on 2008-01-05 12:57:20
A lot of fuss is bieng made out of Bajji's alleged racist remarks..The fact is that the Australian team is shit scared of his bowling, and they will do anything to try and get him out of the series. Maybe he didn't say anything offensive, but even if he did since when did Monkey become more offensive than Curry, or Kaalu, Taxi, Paki, or even Bastard...all terms the Indial players have had to put up with in Australia? So I ask the question:

Why is "Monkey" considered an abusive term, while "Bastard" and "SOB" are not? In india, its a hell of a stigma if you are born of unwed parents, even though it may be acceptable, in Australian society!
Posted by Arjun on 2008-01-05 13:58:18
Arjun, how in God's name can you pre-judge something that has yet to come before the Match Referee? Wait for it to all come out before springing to his defence.

Rain may yet determine this game. Thought occurred to me during the after lunch session. Why don't we tailor all pitches in Australia to opposition needs and strengths. Indian spinners were bowling hand grenades out there.

No other cricketing nation on earth will go out of its way to make things easier for the opposition. We've even got the embargo on watering the outfield so fours are easier to hit and there's less running between wickets for the Indians, vastly inferior athletes that they are.
Posted by Dan Tas on 2008-01-05 14:52:43
Dan..you're right..we should wait for the decision. Touche!

BTW, did you hear the commentators on the Cricket Show during lunch today? Should'nt they be waiting as well?

Also, I'm not trying to defend Bhajji: He should learn to keep his mouth closed, lest he put a foot in.

What I am trying to get at is that it serves no purpose to blow these silly things way out of proportion, because lets face it, it can work both ways, and neither of the teams are truly "gentlemanly" any more.

Shame : Michael Clarke trying to stay at the crease after edging to the first slip!

What a close call on the hat trick ball from Kumble to Symonds,
New movie Brokeback mountain 2, starring
Symonds & Bucknor
Posted by RC on 2008-01-05 17:46:38
Yeah Clarke was waiting for the aussie 12th man, Bucknor to save him, but this was way too obvious to not being given out. How could he look at the umpire for the decision when he clearly edged it behind.
Posted by RC on 2008-01-05 17:51:11
Shame..what was Clarkey thinnking? At best he was dumbstruck, at worst he thought the umpires are deaf!

Yeah Clarkey's being watching Yuvraj too much.

What a gripping day's cricket!! Ponting won't make a foolish declaration in pursuing that record number of Test wins. His first priority is to win the series.

So India must take quick wickets tomorrow or else the game will peter out into a draw.

I have a theory about India and umpires. I've been watching Test cricket for over 40 years. I long held the view that Shane Warne would have taken more wickets, particularly lbw ones, had he been more selective with his appealing.

The same applies with India. In my time of watching the game, India has been the most appeal happy side in the world. They'd appeal if a spectator taking a catch over the boundary was Indian!! In the Boxing Day Test I recall Kumble appealing for lbw against Brad Hogg no less than 12 times in the space of three or four overs.

Umpires tire of this. Then, when a legitimate appeal is made, and they don't hear an edge/see a deflection, they simply assume its just the Indians "up to their old tricks".

Indian players are always an excitable lot
(as are the bloggers!!) but I'd suggest there'd be more success if they curtailed their enthusiasm from time to time.

This is not a racist thing. It is just human nature.
Posted by Dan Tas on 2008-01-05 18:40:56
Clarke not walking was a shocker - after nicking it to first slip. Imagine if Bucknor had given it not out!
Posted by JC on 2008-01-05 18:44:47
This match would have been in India's pocket by now if the umpires were neutral. What was pup Clarke thinking? That Aussie 12th man Steve Bucknor will rule him in? Hussey was out caught behind and even a bat would have given those LBWs against Hussey and Hayden. This is an absolute farce. Indian team should return home after this test.
Posted by Varghese on 2008-01-05 19:01:02
Clarke was only waiting for the umpire's decision, since the ball hit him on the glove.

And some good points, Dan. Tick. VG.
Posted by Tony T on 2008-01-05 19:01:23
Come on, you Indian guys. We know Morgan Freeman is past it, and that Symonds was out in the first innings, but Morgan's hardly been Australia's greatest friend in the past.

And both Laxman and Tendulkar were let off plumb LBWs.
Posted by Tony T on 2008-01-05 19:05:19
To Dan Tas,
I dont have idea where u r coming from but i rather saw warney's appeals as a the best way to work an umpire to give one, I don't have any proof but I m sure many others who are much better judge of the game think the same.
As for Kumble's appealing for Hogg , would you ever see a bowler who doesn't appeal if its near enough? Its asking a too much in this age, isn't it? There is always a lot of appeal when spinners are bowling well, its just the nature of the play , look at murali or anyone.
All in all, i had say your arguement in defense of the umpire is a rather thin one. Mind you, i am not accusing the umpires of bias or anything.. Only in this case, its been a bit rough on indians but shit happens.
Posted by abhi on 2008-01-05 19:07:04
I'm not defending umpires. I think they've had a poor game. I'm suggesting a way for the Indian cricket team to have greater success with their appeals. That leads to winning more matches, obviously.

I've always been an admirer of batsmen who "walk". Here's a contrary view from a "Billy Bolonski" over at a Sportal forum:

"Walking has nothing to do with sportsmanship.

In fact, it could be seen as quite the opposite.

Accept the umpires decision!

Walking is not accepting the umpires decision and basically making a fool out of him. Not a good idea."

Can someone text this to Gilly before start of play tomorrow please.

Just how many no balls did Anil have today?

It's not like we haven't seen a few wickets to no balls this series eh.
Posted by Hanuman on 2008-01-05 19:32:37
If I ever come across Symonds I'd rather be hesitant to say "Hello!" or ask for an autograph 'coz he may very well accuse me of racial abuse.

Indians are not racists. They infact are victims of racism, ask any expatriate. That Harbhajan has racially abused Symonds beggars belief. If he's punished, Indians must stage a protest.

India is a country of diverse cultures, many languages and numerous sects. There even exist languages spoken by only half a dozen. An Indian might be tall or short, black, brown or white, fat or thin. Calling someone 'kalia' or black is on the same lines as calling a short man 'shorty'. There's nothing personal or racial about it. The skin colour is seen as a physical feature and not a characteristic of one's race. If there exists any division, then it is caste.

Racism in India is recognised as a 'foreign phenomenon'. Most Non Resident Indians complain of racism. Again, Monkey is actually seen in India as something divine because in the sacred text of Ramayana, Hanuman (Monkey) 'plays a match winning innings' to help Rama.

I wish Andrew could read this.

If tomorrow I wear a tiger skin, a tiger mask and tie a tail at my back and people call me a 'Tiger', the last thing in the world I'd think is they are racially abusing me. Similarly, calling someone monkey shouldn't be equated to racial abuse. Now honestly, Symonds looks like one. That's got nothing to do with race. Has anyone called Beyonce a monkey?

It seems that Symonds has been racially abused in his childhood and that haunts him. He finds every form of sledging a racial abuse. Just like a school kid who keeps complaining, "He stole my rubber." Symonds too has the same habit. Indians would be wary of racism after what happened in India earlier. Moreover, the last thing Harbhajan would do after completing his half-century is remind Symonds that he is actually a monkey. A fool of such kind would never play at the international stage.

Personally, Symonds looks like an egomaniac who hasn't learnt to smile let alone laugh. If he wins, he jumps and bursts. If he loses, he alleges racial abuse. The Gods even fear his racial abuse allegations, so much so that he was given 6 lives in 3.5 innings.

The only man against whom the Indians would actually come out of their tradition and racially abuse, I guess, is Steve Bucknor.

That must rest the case.

Note: I'm sorry if I've hurt any sentiments.

Not sure of conspiracies by the Australians to have Harbhajan ejected from the series - but i do believe that Australians are supreme hypocrites. You only have to check out youtube for videos of Australians sledging the opposition and getting quite personal. The irony of the Channel 9 commentary is that Ian Healy was perhaps the worst of all - run-ins in Desmond Haynes, De Silva and Ranatunga are legendary (not to mention the Lillee/Miandad spat) Dont recall the Sri Lankans 'dobbing' at the first opporutnity. On the subject of Channel 9 - i though it was totally irresponsible of them to air footage of the 'An Aussie in Bolly' FOX8 documentary...they seem to have relished the role of judge and jury as well as (perhaps) inciting things further..the aussie media at its best. Anyway, its obvious the twat in the crowd who takes offence at the indian crowd doesnt recall the 'Hadless a Wanker' issue, or the wonderfully well-behaved Aussie spectators throwing beer bottles and cans at Englands John Snow in the 70's...a couple of examples out of many i am sure.

Finally - i agreewith some previous posts...since when is 'Monkey' a form of racial abuse? (if thats what was said...) Also - am i to believe that Harbhajan, on top of his game, batting well, and under no pressure, decides - out of the frickin blue - to stop and 'abuse' Symonds? Ahh...i doubt it...there are two side to everything...a la Zidane and Matterazi.

Anyway - i do hope it all gets sorted..with no suspensions..so we can have the best two teams kicking around in world cricket, at full strength, fighting over a tightly contested series victory.

This 'monkey' comment baffles me to no end.
I agree with zapper on many counts, and, how 'monkey' counts as racist, I really don't know.

I hope no match bans are served in the hearing tomorrow, lest it affect the outcome of the series.

The Aussies themselves have been left off the hook umpteen number of times and the burly Symonds should learn to harden himself up a little mentally.

I guess this is another case of the pot calling the kettle black, oops, is that racist too?
Posted by Ajesh Nag on 2008-01-05 21:25:30
Here here Crypto. I'm sure it all get sorted, through the proper processes in place.

Zapper- Symonds looks like an egomaniac? Did you get a picture of one out of an encyclopedia or what?
Posted by Dan Tas on 2008-01-05 21:26:25
Supreme hypocrisy is Indians believing they can't be racist. Casteism = Racism.
Posted by Hanuman on 2008-01-05 21:36:22
Calling someone a monkey insinuates that they are less evolved or less than human. Pretty fcken easy to understand if you are not one eyed.

I really hope Harbi gets flogged for this so that the entire sub continent understands racism is not to be tolerated and what racism actually is: ie not just a white guy calling a black guy names but anybody racially vilifying another.

Hypocrisy is expecting one team to put up with racist comments but expecting to get away with it because you're Indian.

Ajesh, calling someone a monkey crosses the line, I seriously doubt Roy was hurt by it but does that mean he shouldn't report it. If Roy called Sree a black cnt should he get reported?
Posted by Hanuman on 2008-01-05 21:48:08
I agree with you about casteism, I try my level best to campaign against such social stigmas and evils which utterly destroy the social fabric of the country...
Posted by Ajesh Nag on 2008-01-05 21:48:10
Well Dan, didn't you ever imagine how an egomaniac would look like?

I did.

And I'm afraid Symonds' facial expressions are worse than that.

Not only expressions, the way he does 'bang bang' right from the first ball gives me a feeling that he thinks himself to be as good as Don Bradman or 'Australia's Sole Saviour'. I mean Hayden is no ordinary batsman and yet he plays according to merit. But for Symonds' luck, his tally in this series wouldn't have been more than 100 runs.

Anyway, I think u got me there. :)
Posted by Zapper on 2008-01-05 21:48:51
A lot of these comments don't even cross the boundary line, as most of them are said in the heat of the moment.

I really hope both teams stop this stupid bickering and get on with the game.

After all, how difficult is it to keep your mouth shut and let the bat and ball do the talking?
Posted by Ajesh Nag on 2008-01-05 21:52:02
Clarkey is good and all but i think that the aussies need a leason on edging and walking even when the umpire gives it not out! I mean when Symonds was on 30 he obviously nicked it and he gives it not out. What are these umpires?: deaf and blind! But getting back to the point its not just australia anymore its all the countries, always waiting 4 the umpires but they know and i mean if its out its out! So i think that the ICC should have someone to correct the umpires when they get it wrong. But i guess, thats just cricket...
Posted by Coombsy101 on 2008-01-05 22:58:42
I like Kerry O'Keefe's idea. The batsman has to walk if they know they're out. If they nick it and don't walk and the video evidence later proves it, their match fee is docked afterwards. Nice idea. Would never happen but cool to speculate.
Posted by JC on 2008-01-05 23:20:47
But JC, how can you EVER prove if the batsmen KNEW he was out.

He may have got a thin edge and exclaim that he never knew he touched it!

I dont think 'tis practical...
Posted by Ajesh Nag on 2008-01-05 23:28:45
With regards to the Michael Clarke dismissal...perhaps he thought it came off the keepers gloves? Though it was a fairly thick edge, so he must have known he'd hit it.

Ajesh - batsman know when they have hit it..you *just* know (its a sinking feeling - trust me). Its seeing if you can get away with it... ie. gamesmanship. Therefore - he knew he was out...and we know he knew.

I am all for the tennis challenge system though. Though the critics of this system bringing delays to the game...not sure there. Field placements, batsman gardening, captain's discussions...i dont see how throwing to a 3rd umpire for a minute or so is going to impact things further - especially if a team only gets 2 challenges an innings.
Posted by Crypto on 2008-01-05 23:55:15
Personally I don't have a problem with what Clarke did.

Every batsman, from Under 8 juniors through to Test Matches, is entitled to see a raised finger before he makes his way back to the pavilion. There was no sign of dissent at any stage.

I think he may have been in shock, given his double failure in the match.
Posted by Dan Tas on 2008-01-06 00:08:19
This game kind of reminds me of Adelaide.
Posted by Hanuman on 2008-01-06 00:28:45
You know it's hilarious. After inflicting decades of 'mental disintegration' as him of the Waugh Zone referred to it, it's the modern day Australian cricketer getting a lawyer to defend his honour. It's the pot calling itself black mate. All by itself.
I'm not even presuming what was said by either Symo or Bhajji. I don't want to know. And I feel sure that neither does anyone else. Unless it's good for a laugh. Which it won't be. It's petulant. Both Bhaji and Symo are boys who decided never to mature. But they remain intense cricketers. And their shenanigans are fun to watch. On the field.
Taking this to a hearing is just a punt and Punter knows it. Who does he have alongwith him at the hearing? Holier than thou Hayden! Symo's burly best mate and a few other well mannered metrosexual mates.
A suggestion to all involved and spectating. Zip it. Let the bat and ball talk. The Aussie team is good enough without having to resort to stupidity and the Indians have enough to contend with without getting into childish spats.
Posted by Casper on 2008-01-06 01:37:47
If a batsman is supposed to walk if he feels he's actually out when the umpire has ruled otherwise, then he has every right to stand and appeal when he has been wrongly given out.

You can't blame a batsman for standing until the umpire has raised the finger. I mean the same batsman might have been unlucky the last time. Let him enjoy his luck this time and let things even out.

Michael Clarke did the right thing. I wish Bucknor hadn't ruled him out. That would have surely sealed his fate.

The umpires and the ICC are to blame for such crappy rules. It's human to protest and players shoudn't be gagged.
Posted by Zapper on 2008-01-06 03:30:59
If bhajji is being forced out because he has made a bakra of ponting.

Further media or au. press is turning blind eye on empiring blunders in this test match to the extent that even the decision of third empire was also doutfull for that indians decided against even lodging any protest.

Further by complaining against the bhajji they are making mockery of themselves. It seems that the entire australian team is banking on the word "monkey" which only symonds had heard, for winning the match.
Posted by arun on 2008-01-06 04:38:39
I think the series is sealed as far as Australia is concerned. India cannot win at Perth and Hussey & Hayden have done their jobs to take care they don't lose this one in Sydney.

An Autralian win or a draw seems the more likely of the 3 results tomorrow, with an australian win the most propbable.

India cannot last more than 70 overs on the last day no matter what the target and the nature of the pitch. They very rarely have lasted that long in the recent past. The 2 wickets before lunch on Day 3 of Ganguly and Yuvraj in my opinion sealed India's fate for this test.

Assuming 95 overs can be bowled on day 5, Australia can aim to score a quick 100 in 20, declare and set India 310 odd to win in 75 overs.

From that point they will most certainly make a mess of it. It is okay if they lose as long as they go for the target but this team is not so bold. Last time I checked Kapil Dev had retired decades ago.

Mr. Tail Spin, it was the Englishmen who upset Zaheer with the Jelly Beans.

I persoanlly think Australians are in control to win this game but the monkey business (Ponting's decision to press racism charges) and M Clark's decision to stand and wait for the umpire's decision tells me that they are feeling the pressure.

Suddenly they are searching for an appropriate cricketing way of handling a fighting opposition.

This is just a plan to have Harbajan out of action in the series. Ponting is finding really hard to face him and others too are feared of him. This is what AUstralians do when someone is too strong for them or when someone is going to break their own records or when someone is better than them. Just go by the history.

australia and india are good teams but kumble is a sulker and that 19 year old needs to change his bowling style 'cause every time he has a ankle injury so thay waste 20 mins fixing the pitch to make better but he does it again. it unbeliveable some of the people the choose. instead of picking someone randomly the should pick a "Good" bowler.

What a bunch of hypocrites are these Aussie cricketers? Its all good to say a few " funny things" while on the field and forget about it when the play ends by having a beer together. But Oh boy can somebody else do it back, by God NO!!!!. Its not funny anymore, its crossing the line and unsportsmanlike. But is that all thats to it?
Lets look at this
Ponting vs Harbhajan----- WINNER HARBHAJAN, 4 first ball ducks and seven dismissals in 8 innings. The best batsman for Australia having no f'king idea how to play him, so try and get rid of him from the series. Good planning Punter.

Poor old Symmo and Hayden were just minding there own business while Bajju was busy smacking Lee's back, and Ponting was seen desperately trying to calm his own men.Did everyone watch that?. Well, it din't really happen did it???? I always thought a captain is responsible for his men's actions too, and I couldn't see any of that happening on the field.

What a disgraceful behaviour on the ground, and who are they trying to make believe that Bajju started that all? And the great Aussie media, think without bias is all I can say to them.

I sincerely hope that Australai looses their consecutive match winning streak, and India reinforces that thay are just another team playing better cricket occassionally when everything goes well for them.
