Coming out of retirement Part XII
This week's club game was our last two-dayer of the season. Given my stonewalling batting style and run bleeding legspinners are more suited to the long form of the game, I was keen to make the most of this last opportunity. The Cavs turn out was an all time low with only 7 guys arriving. Last time we played at Balmoral, we recruited Dominic, a 14 year old kid playing basketball in a nearby court. Josh was foresighted enough to write down his phone number - a quick call and Dominic biked in 10 minutes later. He even brought an 11 year old friend replete in cricket whites (he'd played a juniors game that morning). So the Cavs eventually took the field with 9 "men".
The opposition openers showed poor footwork and several nicks flew into the slips. Unfortunately, our fielding was worse, spilling several chances. The captain asked if I wanted to go to 3rd slip - I replied with a casual "sure" while inside crying "nooooooo!" The right hand is still tender two weeks after my last effort in the slips cordon. And sure enough, second over in the slips, a nick comes straight for me. Luckily it was off our slower bowler and ballooned at chest height - snaffled without too much pain or fuss. Downside to taking the catch - they might want to keep me in slips.
While the opposition didn't put on any big partnerships, their first drop anchored the innings and our stint in the field stretched through the hot afternoon. After 4 hours and 8 wickets down, our bowler was walking to his mark at the start of the over when the umpire mentioned it was the last over before tea. The captain immediately called me over to bowl. Later, I realised why he always brings me on just before a break. Being a captain who likes a tight economy rate, he fancied my chances of getting smashed were lower with the batsmen batting for the break. I might confirm that theory with him next week.
My first ball was short and the first drop guy wound up for a huge pull shot. Luckily he missed it and I heard that satisfying clonk of ball striking box. Now I'm probably the slowest bowler in the country but he crumpled. Next, I gave the ball plenty of flight, hoping to tempt him down the pitch for a big tonk. Lo and behold, he was tempted down the pitch for a big tonk. Sadly, the ball sailed over midwicket for six.
While the ball was fetched, our opening bowler commented that Brett Lee on super slow mo was faster than my bowling. Last week, I was sledged by the non-striker. Now I'm getting sledged by my own team! Ever since Warnie retired, us leggies get no respect!
Over the tea break, I asked the captain if he wanted me to continue. He didn't seem keen. "Come on, give me a crack at this guy," I pleaded. He reluctantly agreed. My first ball after tea was short and he pulled it over my head for four. Yikes! Two balls later was also shortish, he tried cutting and nicked it through to the keeper (who juggled it for several heart stopping moments) before taking the catch.
Next over, I was bowling to their number 10 who had successfully stonewalled for 24 dot balls. As I ran in, a gust of wind blew into my face so I gave it plenty of flight. The batsman's eyes lit up and he charged. The ball dipped and he skied it into the covers. 3 fielders converged - even I could've reached it - but luckily the wicketkeeper took the catch without a collision. Innings over and 2 for 12 off 2.3 overs (career best figures!) We rolled them for 165 which wasn't a bad effort for 9 guys (including an 11 year old). Even the 14 year old Dominic took a wicket (he's a handy medium pacer).
After over four hours in the blazing sun, my reward was to open the batting. We had 18 overs before stumps and I had one goal - survival. Their opening bowler was putting it in good areas but more threatening was his run-up face. As he approached the wicket, he'd go all crazy eyed, grimacing like he was about to rip my throat out with his teeth. It was so distracting, I was lucky to survive his first over. After that, I averted my eyes and focused on the ball as he ran in.
Unfortunately, we lost two wickets before stumps, finishing on 2 for 26. I hit several thick edges through the air, narrowly evaded the fielders. Yep, my new lucky undies passed with flying colours. So next week's target - 165 for first innings points. Doesn't sound like much but on that cow paddock, it's more like 300.

Well done JC! You trusted your intincts and that helped you get career best figures!
I'm still a bit curious about your points system. Does a first innings lead fetch you extra points?

Yes, you get more points (something like 4 or so) for a first innings lead. 12 points for an outright win. The Cavs are sitting on the bottom of the table for the 2 day comp although if we get 1st innings points in this match, we might go from outright wooden spooners to sharing it with the team we're playing :-)
I shouldn't talk up career best figures - it's from 2.3 overs and over a span of about 10 games.

Plan for next week:
165 is easily achievable if you guys bat all day, so I suggest JC, that you drop anchor. Leave most stuff outside off, but pick off the singles and twos well.
And Re that distracting fast bowler, you never really need to look at him. All that a batter should focus on is the bowlers hand. If you do that well, batting is childs play. The late swing, spin and seam are much easier to pick if you have laser focus on the ball, every ball. Let him do an Amrish Puri act with his face, but that matters in the least to you.
Don't worry JC, my crystal ball says you guys should see it through, even if the neighbours dog bites up your lucky undies :-)

hey jc do u get relegated or something finish last???well thats how it is here.
we got relegated to the 5th tier last tier. i started as a fresher when my club was in the 3rd tier(there are 5 tiers in all) and then a string of two bad seasons saw us in the 5th tier.we play 19 games in all and we won just 4.

I don't think we have tiers in the current setup - there's 7 teams in this competition but no grade below (or above) us. Your team seems to be having a similar experience to ours (we're bottom of the 2 day comp ladder) but if we can win most of the last three 1 dayers, we could make the championship game.

JC,so u come in the top two or three you get to the championship and play a few other teams rite???or is it a game(some kinda finals or somethin)
wht i was talking about in the last post abt my team was what happened last year.the last match was an amazing one.we where playing another minnow(we are a minnow too)and as usual i came 4 down and i just had to survive for around an hour and a half(in a 50 over game).survive because we could smell rain.it was pouring in the next pin code(my team mate had brought a transistor to listen to the weather forecast) and if we manage a draw, the pts would be shared and we would be saved relegation.
so i was battling it out there from the 23rd over.even when the ball was around 35 overs(that time we where 8 down) old they had 4 slips.not because they where expecting me to nick 1 but they wanted to sledge me(they would say 'hey kid go drink milk in your house.you can't hit a decent boundary why r u here' and things like that)the fast bowler told me to hook if i was a man(no square leg)and then he would pelt me with short ones. But i was playing it really safe.then came the comment from the fast bowler that made me really mad(god knows why)he said 'dont wear whites its an insult to cricket wear a saree'(the traditional clothing for indian women)
so in the very next over, the first ball from that loud mouthed moron i tried to hook and i ended up unconscious(the ball hit me square on the head).i was carried off to a nearby clinic.the next batsman went for a golden duck and the other team won.around 10 mins later the first sign of showers came.
the teams here are owned by corporate companies and so thanx to a string of loses and also relegation the team was sold. so all of us had to vacate because the new owners would be playing.now im unemployed in terms of cricket.
you guys dont have individuals owning the team and u dont get????But u have home ground rite???we have to pay to occupy the nets.and the owners pay us.im a minor so i dint get paid but a few of my team mates where paid by the owners.thats why the company sold the club.we were like a prototype Liverpool.owners gave it everything but we never had too many wins.

back here in india we have the GUEST PLAYER system.if ur a good player u come play for us and u get paid(and u also get lunch and a pair of whites).usually if u dont have a proper squad or if ur up against somebody really good thats wht the opponents do.they bribe an amazing player and walk away with a thumping win.most guest players are from the lower middle class and they make use of opportunities like these to get a few bucks.

You get money, food and clothing just to play low grade cricket? I seriously was born in the wrong country! Noone in Aussie club cricket owns a team - you just get a bunch of mates together and form a team. We pay something like $50 per match to the local school for the use of their field as a home ground. Our home ground has nets but they're for primary school kids - the roof is so low, you have to bend your knees to get the ball to go under them (particularly for me and my loopy leggies).
Great story, vishnu, fascinating insights into Indian club cricket. I would actually like to hear more of this kind of stuff on cricket-blog rather than just talking about the international game - all the classic stories and 'glorious innings' that happen at school ovals and fields around the world each weekend.
I love the image of the whole team sledging you while you try to grind out the overs. I've never had a really good sledge directed at me apart from my own teammates (and I play in Australia) mainly because I've never batted threateningly enough to warrant a good sledge. So one of my batting ambitions is to be good enough to get sledged although when it finally does happen, I'll probably thank the bowler for taking the effort.
Shame about your team (and the whole unconscious thing - sounds nasty). I hope you find another team, keep us posted!

Good to see sledging is enjoyed everywhere. I would hate to think that other countries miss out all the fun.
It would be interesting to see the different sledges that go around different countries, it would give you a real insight into the culture.

JC,the grass is always green on the other side of the fence.while you want to play in india,i long to play cricket the aussie style.lush green outfields, sportive opponents, captains who know atleast the spelling of cricket.
JC,about being paid, the employee's of the company that own the team dont get paid but the other guest players or players they have scouted do get paid.for example in another 6-7 years im counting on a srinivasan(a fellow cricketer in my academy who is around 16 yrs old now)to make it to the indian team.that guy gets paid by his team.cause he is a fisherman's son(i dont think his whole family can earn 50$ in a month).srini is part of the working class in his house.he keeps his clothes in the kit bags he wins as man of the match.he comes from a distance of about 3 times the circumference of MCG to play his cricket.ppl like him get paid. That guy cant afford tracks and a cricket kit.now to make players of such class play for club for a long time, until a club from a higher tier calls him up,u just have to win his loyalty by getting him tracks, sponsoring a decent kit, traveling expenses.or be like my coach(in an academy not the club)he helped srini to shift schools(from a non cricket playing skool to one of the best cricket playing skools) and he still pays the fees for him(just because he plays awesome cricket).so even if u did play for an indian club i dont think u wud be payed.by no stretch of imagination would u call this low grade cricket.again taking srinivasan for eg,his performance in the bottom tier(5th division)helped to do a frog leap and is now playing in the 2nd tier(his team is placed among the top three one of the favorites to break into the top tier).from there each paper score(over 25 runs or bagging 3 or more wkts gets published in the newspaper)is one step closer to higher level cricket.with consistent performance for ur club or academy or skool u establish urself as a useful talent to exploit.
why even dinesh karthick(he was once a team mate)plays for his company in the top tier.so does badrinath, sreesanth etc etc(this is only in one part of the country is the system is a bit diff up north)
andrew about the sledging.its really funny if u think about how the opponents sledge here.(and JC u dont have to be quality to be sledged at,if u were a kid or u looked nervous they d have a go at u)i talked to u about corporate companies owning a team.usually the big guns in the companies play the game.a few times they would cross the line and the umpire wud dare not interfere.sometime people use abusive language(most of the time its these cocky casual cricketer)they wud call be a porambokku(translated from tamil to english means "waste land"),asshole(the tamil word sounds really bad)etc etc.other times its the conventional sledging i was talking about.a dare or if it was a 15 yr old kid who was playing they wud say things like i mentioned in the last post. But if the umpires did have a word with the players guilty of sledging they wud go for an indirect sledging.as in they wud either cheer the bowler by saying the bowler is scared(if its a fast bowler)or they wud say the batsman cant see the ball(cause its too fast again if its a fast bowler)or they wud say he doesnt know to play that kinda of a length.this is one type of indirect sledging the other type in where the bowler and the slip or the keeper(or even keeper and slip)will have a conversation so that the batsman also can clearly here the two talking.i was a victim of this yet again.the bowler will bowl a short one and say something like "is there a bathroom here?" and keeper would reply "yeah someone really wants to pee"(implying that i was so scared that i had to pee)well these are the types of sledging I have experienced in my short club cricket career.
JC i was talking to you about lush green fields how i dream to play there one day.cause the last game i played was in a ground that was like a bad laid road.i went for a sliding stop to save a couple of runs and i ended up in the hospital win a torn ligament.well that cricket.hope to get back on track next season.yeah jc would like to discuss more stories(like negative tactics here,IDEA CRICKET thats a funny topic, brainless captains, getting bullied around by teammates, inspiring team mates, the fat owners etc)from my short yet eventful cricket life sometime in the near future.

ajesh, wht i described to you was a mere gist of wht really happened.actually the opponent captain is as great a sadist as darrell hair.he got a spinner in both and ends he ordered them to bowl what boycott might describe as "diddly doodlies".well i was tempted to go for it and attempt to get my first half century but was stubborn not to fall for the trick.after i made sure the spinners were operating from both ends i gave my dripping-with-sweat helmet back to the guys.u do get some kinda tickling feeling if u wear those skull guards for too long.as soon as the opponent captain saw me part with my head gear he got another over from the spinner and the next over he brought on the fast bowler after an animated and calculated talk with his other spinner.he made sure i wont call for my helmet ie he talked long and hard with his spinner and his fast bowler who was in mid on was thrown the ball.well the umpire said told me to play without the helmet for an over.well at that point after you have played 15 odd overs u think u can handle anything.i told ma self"one over??.i've handled so many short ones from that fast bowler 1 over cant kill me".well it dint kill me but it lost me the match
But ajesh, after i got up and when i really thought abt the game i always remembered Harsha.i hope u can recall that match we won(surprisingly)thanks to harsha after one hit his head while he was behind the wkt

I dont seem to remember the winning part but I do recall the blow. 'Twas sickening, and I think thats why he started wearing helmets after that.
Thank goodness no injury ever prompted me to wear all those paraphernalia like arm guards, thigh guards, chest pad or even inner thigh pads that some people wear!
But Vishnu, I reckon you shud've wasted some time by tying your shoelaces, removing pads, faking a thigh strain, sprained ankle or something like that...

JC,
Good Job Man and I mean the blog of game. Likes Jerome K Jerome , and the Wodehouses and Priestley , maybe mighty pleased in their Graves (that humor and essay writing will long live). The game narrative takes me back down the memory lane, those Sunday Games on School ground and gullie games to disturb siesta of neighborhood. Will share about them some day, with more time on handd
Cheers, Mahesh
