India vs Sri Lanka 8th CUB ODI

Australia are playing crap at the moment yet they still manage to find themselves atop the points table with daylight second. India and Sri Lanka play today with the loser finding themselves clinging to the bottom rung of the ladder. Both teams have had recent opportunities to defeat Australia but fell over before the finish line. Who will have the kahunas to take the points today? Live scorecard

Lanka in charge. India has let it slip away.

India is struggling for a break through here, but the run rate is fairly low, it could be another 200-220 type chase.

Andrew, methinks, 250 -260 kind of target will be set. They are 127 with 102 balls to go. * wickets in hand. They should be able to score about 125 in these 102 balls from here.

so much for an "ugly" display by dhoni ... I wud pay to watch this guy bat ... he is sensible ... damn simple, uncomplicated and sensible ....

Dhoni saved you guys again ;)

Be glad you have someone who can handle the heat of International cricket...

Yuvraj is back in some form, but I think Uthappa needs to be dropped...

Kumar looked ordinary - he is a very poor mans version of James Hopes - he cant bat as well as him or bowl as well as him and Hopes isnt even that good...

I think they need to bring Raina or Karthik in to give them a go and also, if Sehwag is fit get 10 overs out of a combination of Yuvraj, Sehwag and Tendulkar...

That allows you to bat Pathan at 8, Harbhajan at 9 and then have two bunnies (Take your pick out of Sharma, Sreesanth and Patel)

I think Sachin should bat at 3 or 4, if Sehwag comes back, makes no sense exposing him to the new ball...

Gambhir looks good for a 20 - 30, Sehwag will do the same, Sachin can get some as well, Rohit is a bit hit or miss, as is Yuvi but Dhoni is doing the Bevan role at the moment and with Pathan making useful contributions will make your batting more competitive...

Thoughts?

I think it is still open between India and Sri Lanka for the final Finals spot...

Sri Lanka have 7 decent players - 4 batsmen and 3 bowlers...

Hard to see Aussies missing out on the Finals

Ace - agreed with many of your points.

Particularly your first re: Dhoni. The Indian fans smashed him the previous outing because, being human, he expressed extreme disappointment at Rohit being run out...suffice to say i am sure both principles are cool with things. Anyway - again, he saved the day...niether Sri Lanka nor Australia have a player in his class in that role at the moment. Indeed, he is the modern day Bevan.

Would have been nice for Sri Lanka to have gotten up...now its up to them in Melbourne.

Oh - great to see Yuvi back in some form.

Mailman

It is good to see a few teams now atleast giving the Aussies a run for their money - though our batting is well off colour at the moment...

There are too many safe players in the Aussie team at the moment - a parallel to India's fab four who were never dropped for a while, regardless of performance...

If Ponting doesnt make any runs this series or in Pakistan what can you do with him?

I think Haydos will retire from ODIs soon - to help the transformation of the team - lets see what happens

Normally that player is Hussey, unfortunately he is having a very bad run in form at the moment. He used to able to come in, take an over or two to get sighted and score a run a ball score. The fact that he is not performing is probably Australia biggest problem. He has saved many games for Australia.

Dhoni seems to be having a losing streak in the coin toss. Maybe he should get someone else to call.

Andrew -

I think both India and Sri Lanka are well suited for run-chases against Australia by virtue of their bowling. Sri Lanka need a 'Dhoni' - maybe bat Jayawardene down the order? Dont know.

Havent had a look at the stats, but i'd like to see a timeline/graph of Husseys avge. Is it on the decline? Or are both of his ODI and Test avges just a result of great starts? Out of curiosity more than anything...he's prob the only Australian player i like, along with Lee...they seem to play the game in the correct spirit.

mailman, don't get start on playing in the right spirit, because then we would have to talk about all the bad things every player has ever done going back to the dawn of cricket.

Cricket is a sport in which people play to win. Trying to assign some gentlemanly trait to different players is just stupid. After all you have India players spitting at Australian, you have Indian captains after they losing complain about their opposition and their own team. Trust me its a waste of space.

But back to cricket. Sri Lanka really need a Symond/Yuraj type player to help finish off the innnings, a true power player. They have all their powerplayers at the start of the innings, which means if they lose quick wickets its game over, with no one to take advantage of the last ten overs.

Hussey is starting to go down in averages, its a true shame as much as he while he isn't a natural stroke maker, he used to buckle down and create scores and partnerships from nothing. Hopefully he finds his form again, with him fully fit its very hard to dislodge the Australian batting order.

Andrew - I agree with the comment on sportsmanship and spirit...

Everyone is at fault and unless there is a really a point in time when really harsh penalties are enforced consistently then player behaviour will not change...

If you ban them from the IPL that might change their behaviour ;)

At the moment it seems there are different rules - if you are Indian you can basically do what you like - BCCI is the only reason Zimbabwe are still part of the ICC

It allows them to have a voting block of India, SL, Pak, Bang, Zimb, and sometimes SA who tend to vote together on all issues

Lets see what happens going forward RE Huss, Hussey's career will have ups and downs and in the wash up I rekon he will still average 50+ which is amazing...

Ace, your mentality never changes....u keep poking at the indians and the BCCI...dont waste my time here with stupid comments of urs.
Posted by rk9 on 2008-02-20 15:39:26
rk9 - Do you think Zimbabwe should be part of the ICC?

What particular comments do you take offence with, and where do I poke fun at Indians mate?

Ace,

I do agree with you here. The voting block formed by India and Co. is disgusting because they don't have the smarts to when exactly push the button and how to do it subtly.

Otherwise I don't see any problem with India controlling the world of cricket, only I wish they did with some grace. But the Aussies and English are very clever. They know exactly how to push BCCI to make them look evil or foolish.

Also do remember there was a time, not long back, when Aussies got away with some of the atrocious behaviour on the field. And Indians got punished for some of the same things they did.

Its a great time to be Indian cricket fan. Just to see how other fans are grudging the power BCCI commands. Indian team, well, they will never be world beaters like Australia. But let them atleast use this financial clout.

"Indian team, well, they will never be world beaters like Australia." - Subhash

May i know the basis of your astrological utterances? Is it based on the position of stars which you might have gazed at nights after nights? The profoundness of your statement took me aback.

No Argument,

Don't be so hard on yourself. By the time Indians develop a system to churn out quality cricketers to consistently challenge Australia, IPL like championships would've drained talent out of national sides and start dictating. Or you can still delude yourself that Indians can somehow put together a decent cricket team that plays consistent cricket. I don't care either way.
