Australia vs Sri Lanka 11th CUB ODI
Australia's greatest nemesis over the past few decades hasn't been Tendulkar, Lara, reverse swing or turning subcontinent pitches. It's been the dead rubber. Can they defeat their dreaded bugbear today? Live scorecard

Bracken (4/29) restricts SL to 221.
{My sixth sense tells me Gilly is gonna fire today, Australia win by 7/6 wickets}

Good call Ajesh, Gilly got a 4 off the first ball.
I have a feeling that Gilly would have fired at that game against India, except for that catch :-). So hopefully Gilly gets some good form before the finals.
I am also interested to see how Hopes does as a Opener (to replace Gilly). He seemed to do well the few times he has been there before.

First of let me say that, once again, this is a great innings by Gilchrist...
Now I've got that out of the way: this is probably the most gut-turning, arse-licking period of commentary I have ever heard...
From all of them.
Do they replay this to them on the morning when they've calmed down?

Mark Nicholas has been drooling over Gilly all summer. If only he'd announced his retirement at the end of the season!

How about that? Gilly plays a blinder! Now Punter and Pup should just steer them through, hopefully one of them getting out!

The Nicholas performance has boon one of the features of this Summer of Discontent.
But they were all lining up tonight to pay homage.
A bit like a Bulldogs Bonding Session...

I apologize for sounding ignorant, but why does everyone here hate Mark Nicholas?
From what little I've heard of him, i.e. 2005 Super Series, 06 VB series and 07 WC, he sounds like a pretty decent commentator and I think he has a few thousand first class runs to boot.
Surely he's not one eyed or prone to moments of madness like Ranjit Fernando, who on-air during the WC final claimed that Sri Lanka won the 96 WC on Duckworth-Lewis!
(This is the 3rd time I'm asking this!)

And thats what we call as a collapse. Oh Gilly, he surely wouldnt have seen this as he played that memorable innings.
Had a quirky smile. It seems Ponting flashes around the aussie tv sets as a guaranteed performer ... heheheh

Ajesh,
I agree with you that Mark Nicholas in the past has been perfectly adequate..
But this year, as the Heir Apparent on the Ch9 team he has been toe-curlingly fawning over the Aussies, especially Gilchrist.
It's like there's some strange Stockholm Syndrome stuff going on...

Ajesh .... its a far fetched dream, Australia winning by 6/7 wickets ...
Thanks Gilly for that innings ... if only you read this !!!

lol at least you got part of it right Ajesh.
I think I know the plan. Ponting wanted to give Hogg a game to remember and seeing as Hogg couldn't manage 5 wickets he decided to let Hogg be the match winner with the bat. True Sacrifice there :-).
So far Hogg is doing the job...
13 off nine balls compared to Hussey's 5 off 24 balls.

The dead rubber is killing Australia again.
Mankind doesn't need to know when the earth will die, doesn't need to know whether there is life on mars, needn't search for the lost island of Atlantis, or even invent a cure for cancer...before we find out why Australia keep losing so many dead rubbers!!
Even Einstein will be baffled by this one...

Ajesh so much of what makes Australia good at this game is that drive to win. If there is no need to win, they take the eye off the ball and their intensity that drives them fails.
The best example of that is the World Cup. Undefeated through the whole world cup. Yet only just before they lost the tri-nation series to England and the series in New Zealand.
Congrats to Sri Lanka. Good game, nice decision by the captain there. Shame they couldn't do this when it counts.
Oh well at least the Australian will be hungry come the finals :-).

Australia's confidence taking a big toll today... this will affect their performance in the final. Dramatic Collapse, not really playing like a world champ team this summer. Mediocre performance coupled with loose comments on- and off-field has made it look like a "beatable team" everytime they come out on the field...

Shocking collapse, Gilly and the bowlers make it respectable with the bat.
And No Argument, we are world champions at losing dead rubbers also. Confidence will not be lost and neither will your continuing contradictary anti-australian comments.
Life is tough for teams that excel, it really is.

"Ajesh so much of what makes Australia good at this game is that drive to win. If there is no need to win, they take the eye off the ball and their intensity that drives them fails."
How come australia had 16 win on the trot twice? There were no need to win series by 5-0, once it is 3-0 it should have resulted in 2 losses to make it 3-2. Never heard a more bizzare explanation on anything...

ShootME - you're all class...spoken like a true Aussie...geez...calm down.
Anyway - Sri Lanka played well..the win also puts a lot of perspective around Australias wins in this series when defending totals. Should be a great game on Sunday - tightly contested i'm sure.

HI JC, Didn't get to read ShootME's post so will have to take your word for it,
BUT this doesn't cross any lines??
"I am really amazed: is this stunning lack of objectivity & common sense a result of geographic isolation & lack of exposure to the world & resultant xenophobia, or unbelievable levels of nationalism that overrides common sense"

I, like many here, post borderline comments but this, IMHO, is simply thinly veiled racism and should have drawn more criticism.
Also, JC, I understand that in the interest of balance you need to post comment on Matt Hayden's silly remarks. But remember Matt Hayden is 1st and foremost a grate bat and 2nd a reluctant role model, that's the reality. The other point that you failed to note or qualify in your "Matt Hayden's weed spray" post is that Harbhajan has racily abused Hayden's best mate on more than 1 occasion, this combined with the nature and tone of the interview surely helps to partly mitigate his silly remarks? I'm not condoning what he said just adding balance.

PhotoHog,
Nice job. I was not following this thread, and was very surprised to see you quoting my comments from a different thread here.
Firstly, it is not nice on your part to move posts out of their original thread.
Secondly, bringing my comments into a totally different context, & calling for their removal is a tad funny at best, and immature otherwise. Seems like you are running out of facts, can't bat & hoping to get me banned :-)
Thirdly, my comments are not racist at all. If you read my previous posts, I have admired Australian team many times; they have been my role models for their commitment, athleticism, & talent.
I have seen far worse commentary on India & its cricket team not just in this blog but elsewhere, and I think you have your sensitivity meter abit shot.

Guys,
Come on.. Please don't act like bunch of school kids reporting to the teacher that he hit me. Lets move on. We have just couple of more games ( may be one more ), to finish this series.Lets hope that we have thriller games to forget the stupid things happened so far.

Sorry Ravi but I have to agree with PhotoHog on this one, your remarks where in very bad taste at best and could be viewed as borderline racism, JC should have culled them. Just because you had the Australian cricket team as your role model doesn't mean you can post whatever you like about them and Australians. My wife is Indian and my 3 children 1/2 does that give me the right to post over generalised untruths about India and Indian people? I know that PhotoHog and other Aussies give you a hard time but that doesn't excuse some of your comments. Maybe we should all try and stick to the cricket and leave social and cultural reporting to others?

JJJ,
"I maintain my innocence ..."
Have we heard that phrase before?
I respectfully disagree. If you read my post, it was not a statement, but a "What the .." kind of surprise. The past happenings on field between Aussie & India teams have to do more with cultural misunderstandings than cricket. And when you look at the hostile way in which Aussie team treats visiting teams, makes bizzarre excuses like above, it surprises foreigners as to what is going on. No other intl cricket team in the world has similar image. Not even England.
I have seen some unbelievable racist crap about India here in this blog. And I am surprised my comment is broderline racism. If someone can explain to me Hayden's behavior logically before & after his weedspray, that would help form better opinion about the Aussie team elsewhere. Not running to the admin.
I continue to admire Aussie team for their cricketing talent, but not their biggest fan for their theatrics both on & off the field.
