Australia sunk further into the mire on Day 3. Surrendering a 1st innings deficit of 201 runs then India adding an additional 100 runs without loss has taken this game completely out of Australia's reach. With a full two days to play, it's difficult to see Australia playing it out for a draw. It would require more steel in our batting line-up than has been seen yet.
So the next two days should give us an insight into this upcoming era in Australian cricket. Will our experienced top order lay the platform that used to be the foundation of our batting strength? Can our inexperienced middle-order rally around Mike Hussey and hold out the persistent Indian bowling attack? Hard to see it happening but an Aussie fan can hope. Live score courtesy of cricinfo...

Well on this wicket, 450 is equal to a 300 on Bangalore or Delhi wicket. The track is still good for batting and whatever spin is there is going to be slow. Even the bounce will become lower but not uneven. I expect India to bat 45 mins post lunch and score briskly. They would like to give themselves atleast 135 overs to ball at the Aussies and try and force a win.

The commentary from the ABC is quite amusing, they seem positively scared for Hayden for his aggressive batting. You can see the plan from Hayden, a bit of aggressive batting could make India switch to a more defensive field settings increasing the chances of a draw/win.
Regardless of whether its reckless or not, its good to see Hayden batting aggressive.
Either way good to see some competitive cricket.

Australia lose Haydos and Katich in one Harbhajan over. Barring double centuries by Ponting and Hussey, we're screwed.
On the other hand, I really, really hope Michael Clarke makes it to the last over before stumps then is on strike from ball 1. That would be an awesome over to watch live.

2 wickets in 1 over has certainly set Aussies back. It was also nice to see a few runs coming from Hydos bat. Now I don't see Aussies being too aggressive.
Lets see now what Bhajji does as he becomes a very good bowler if he picks up an early wicket. Here he has picked up 2

Okay, we just lost Ponting and Hussey in three balls. Ponting is really becoming Sharma's bunny.
But no panic stations yet. I'm sure Clarke and Watson have it in them to build a Gilchrist/Langer at Bellrieve style 300 run partnership.
Oh wait, no, we really are screwed.

57/4 - Excellent Captaincy by Dhoni. Amit Mishra is not inducted, Harbhajan is on cloud 9 claiming 3 wickets. Ponting clean bowled by Ishant Sharma.
At this rate the match may not extend to 5th day.

So this is what it's been like for the rest of the world over the past decade, huh? :-(

Guys, India usually gets a few quick wickets in the 4th innings at Mohali but in the end 1 partnership saves the day for the visitors. I remember vaguely but this has happened with NZ, Lanka and Pakistan in the past. However this time India has about 35 extra overs to their disposal.

By the way Ishant has picked up Ponting's wicket 5 times in 5 test matches and even though not this time but Zak has picked up Hydo 7 times (the max no of times Zak has picked up a single batsman)

Clarke 4 runs - 16 balls, Watson 2 runs - 19 balls. What they are trying to do? Trying to stick on till the end of the day? Never Never i have seen a Test match where Oz struggling to carry play to next day by glueing to wicket. may be they got it from Dravid!

ssukhdial, that's optimistic from an Aussie point of view. I'd be surprised if Australia make it another 31 overs.

Well I expect them to. After all they are world champs : )
A little bit of counterattacking will really help the Aussies

oz have forgotten attacking right now. They want to see the end of the day! Amit Mishra and Harbhajan bowling in tandem now.Bhajji 10 overs and given away 12 runs. Mishra 3 overs 3 runs.

Pup - only 18 overs to go. Do it for Lara! Oh and for your country!

JC, pup is listening you. But a long long way to go to win the match. more than 400 runs and just 3 more new persons to play with him. Indians are also a bit tired now. Do you think Oz is playing to win the match?

JC, There is still the last over of the day left

Win the match? You're kidding, right? Australia has ZERO chance of winning this Test. Their chance of batting out a draw is pretty much zero too. Haddin doesn't have it in him to bat out a couple of sessions. Clarke has the class but the grit? I dunno.
This is not the Australia of old, we're mere mortals nowadays. The only question is whether Clarke will survive the last over of the day. 6 overs till stumps so we'll soon know...

Last over of the day coming up. Sehwag bowling. Haddin gets a single in the penultimate over so he retains strike. Michael Clarke will have leaden feet, I think, no way he's running a quick single in the last over!

Interesting times for Australian cricket - but let's not call them dead at this time. This Test is gone and it will be pretty difficult to retain the trophy from here. But lets remember we are playing in India and we have struggled there for many years. The bowling hasn't been great - but there are few aussie bowlers over the years who have done well there (Warne's figures were never that great on these dry pitches).
The Aussies have come back to the pack, that's for sure. So what does this mean ? We might lose the odd game...but we might have a whole lot more close / competitive cricket. A competition dominanted by one team doesn't always make for great viewing...going forward India, South Africa, England and Australia will all be fighting to be the top team - that is an exciting prospect !

I don't mind Australia losing -- we have done a fair bit of that in recent times. But if we are looking down the barrel then we need to make sure we go out in style. Getting angry because things aren't going your way isn't cool, it is proud and foolish. Australia has an ego problem.India have outplayed Australia in every facet of the game this time. Dhoni has been a far better captain that Ponting in this game too.
