Matt Hayden labels India a third world country

This happened over a week ago but I just found out that Matthew Hayden labelled India a third world country. Specifically, he blamed Australia's slow over rates on having to play in a third world country:

"Often we find ourselves with hands on hips waiting for someone to either face up or someone in the sightboard to move away; all the little frustrations that happen in Third World countries and the heat as well."

Understandably, Indians are furious. Even Pakistan ex-captain Wasim Akram struck back on behalf of his rival, labelling Australia "a village". People, get some perspective! This is not about Australia versus India. It's not a culture war. There is only one factor to be considered in all this... Matthew Hayden is a tool.

This is a guy who blamed our 2005 Ashes loss on God. Who expressed disappointment after getting bitten by a dog. While a devout Christian, he's also a form atheist. He threw Roy under the bus just yesterday. And let's not forget his arrogant sledging the English after they took the Ashes from us.

So to Cricket-Blog readers outside of Australia, let me stress that Matt Hayden is not a good indicator of how Australians think. On the contrary, we all think he's a bit of a nutter.

Yep, Haydo's is a tool.. Although... why the offence from Indians? Isn't india a 3rd world country? It's certainly "developing" if that's a nicer phrase.

With 41% of the population living in poverty (US$1.25/day) and 828 million Indians living on less than US$2/day, surely the health, education and standard of living would not be dissimilar to that of many African 3rd world nations?

Stop using sense and statistics to back up your arguments Mose. It's far easier to use bombastic and inflammatory statements.

You'd get the feeling Haydo could run for and easily win the governorship of Texas. Has all the subtlety of a sermon in Salt Lake City.

Sorry Moses, deleted that comment, crossed the xenophobia line.

Cheers JC, I was tempted to.. 3rd post in has gotta be some sort of record

@ moses

I don't think the Indians are too upset about the third world country remark. We all know with all the progress we made in the last decade and even though we are the 2nd fastest growing country in the world, we still have massive poverty and a LOOONNGGG way to go before becoming a proper developed nation.

What upset the Indians are the excuses Matt Hayden and Ponting keep making for losing to India or playing bad or slow over rates. Australian over rates have been really slow for a really long time now. But still Matt Hayden blames India for the over rates. Ponting keeps writing in his Captains diary how all the problems in his life are directly because of India etc etc.

Honestly with all the problems Symonds goes through, he is way more respected in India than Ponting and Hayden. We were really upset when those idiots in the crowd were doing their monkey chants in the Future Cup ODI series and inspite of the monkeygate scandal, Symonds got a standing ovation in Hyderabad when he came here to play in the IPL. Symonds might make excuses to CA over his pub brawls but when it comes to cricket, he never blames India or anyone else for his own lack of form or anything else.

Nobody is contesting India is a developing country. But do you have to rub it in to cover your pathetic performance? Next they will complain about the long flight to India for losing a series. Sore losers is the word that describes this.

Reading thru the Duncan Flether's article that JC pointed to reg. the Ashes series Aussies lost, I was surprised to see Gilchrist saying loudly so the umpire could hear "We're owed one dodgy decision here, boys" in the second innings at Trent Bridge. This was the same guy who admitted to the Rahul Dravid caught behind appeal in the Sydney Test. It seems he wants to be known as honest cricketer, but likes the good side of undeserved umpire decisions when it suits him.

pub brawls? rayden, learn to read.

Interestingly, on the over rate issue, you could hear Rudi Koertzen ask the NZ batsman in Brisbane to face up and not keep the bowler waiting at the top of his mark. Not all slowing of the game is the fault of the fielding side. But, everyone likes to jump on bandwagons when it suits them.
Posted by jaradevans on 2008-11-27 09:27:08
@rayden: you read Pontings tour diaries? I blame you that he keeps writing them then! I agree with your point that to blame India for over rates is a terrible excuse, we blame Ponting for the tri-overly field changes.

@ravi: apart from impotent bowling in the 2nd test our performance was far from pathetic. Are you watching the ODI's with England? That's pathetic.

I read Ponting's tour diary for the 2005 Ashes - I figured it would be like watching the Titanic movie - a sense of unwitting but impending doom. But Punter can take the most dramatic, enthralling Test series in living memory and drain it of all excitement with his dour, plodding prose. I haven't read one since.
Posted by JC on 2008-11-27 11:03:33
I've got a signed copy of that one at home, the wife got it for me. Looked at the pictures but had no overwhelming desire to relive that particular series.
Posted by Moses on 2008-11-27 12:23:15
I was interested in reading Ponting's perspective on one of my favourite moments of the series - when Ponting got struck in the face on Day 1 of the Lords Test and the Poms just stood around staring at him. A fascinating and telling moment in the series. But Ponting barely touched on it in his diary - very disappointing.
Posted by JC on 2008-11-27 13:29:21
Iain O'Brien's blog is fantastic - honest, passionate, a whole new level compared to Ponting's soulless diary. Wish I'd known of it before so thanks for the link! Will be keeping an eye on it over the 2nd Test.

@ moses

Ponting latest captains diary is all over the internet and Indian news because of the amount of accusations he has made against India.

Australia is still clearly the no. 1 side in the world - so I just don't understand why they need to come up with excuses for one series loss. Why can't they just accept they lost because they were beaten by a better side in that series and they need to work on a few things. Ponting and Hayden keep making excuses for everything and India seems to be their favourite punching bag.

@ jaradevans

Ok I did read what actually happened with Symonds recently and I guess he was genuinely innocent. I actually like Symonds and am happy he is in the Australian team.

Thought Ricky's effort wasn't as droll as Glenn's Tour Diary of 2005 (and that was WITH a ghost writer). I found more literary achievement reading Haydo's chicken casserole recipe.

Poignant statement on the cricket eujal. You can use real words if you like.

Given that this is about why Australia haven't been winning in India

http://yellowmonkeysbananabucket.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

I think Australians have been too negative. It is possible to win in India and doesn't need a miracle. The reason Australia never won was because they only toured twice from 1970 to 1996. The teams that toured were the WSC-depleted team and the Border team of 1986. These were the worse periods of Aus cricket from 1970-96 and those two teams aren't representative of Australia at the time

Wow JC got a personal issue with Matty or what?

Matt is one of the nicest blokes you could ever hope to meet, period.

As for your ammunition against him, what is your problem? That's the limpest character assassination ever.
We all know God made Glenn trip over a ball in 05?
Who wouldn't be disappointed at being bitten by a dog - What the?
What the hell is wrong with sledging the Poms? Are you really Australian?

I suppose Harby isn't a little obnoxious weed either, eh?

Speak for yourself in future.
Posted by Hanuman on 2008-12-01 14:28:22
Well Hanuman. What JC is trying to point out is nothing against Haydo. It's his attitude. He is one heck of a CeeCee. Keeps making silly excuses for losses. He won't say that he was in pathetic form, is tooooooo old and should retire. He was saying that I could not score because India is a 3rd world country and the over rate was slow because India is a 3rd world country. U know something India has actually improved from Aussie's last 2 tours but still there was no complain from him earlier because he was scoring. Proves what a bad looser and a pathetic sportsman he is
