Australia vs South Africa, Boxing Day Test, Day 4

I've got a theory on JP Duminy. Consider that in his first two Test matches, he's batting at a Husseyesque average of 108.5 runs. Even more impressive than the statistics is the nature of his innings. Under extreme pressure in Perth, he played a match winning innings to guide South Africa to a historic victory. Similarly on Day 2, South Africa were dead in the water and he scored a maiden Test century in just his 2nd Test. All of South Africa (except perhaps Ashwell Prince) must be delighted at the emergence of this future superstar.

Meanwhile, Mike Hussey is a mere shell of his former self. In the same 2 Tests in which Duminy amassed 217 runs, Hussey has limped to 0, 8 and 0. When a ball was skied in his direction yesterday, he lurched around like a drunken sailor until the ball thudded into the ground metres away.

The most embarrassing moment I've ever had on a cricket field was fielding at cover. The batsman dropped the ball down near the pitch and took off for a quick single. Hoping to effect a run out, I scooted towards the ball, picked it up cleanly and in a single motion underarmed towards the bowler's end, Andrew Symonds style. However, I let go of the ball too late and it ballooned several metres over the top of the stumps. Every fielder on the ground erupted into laughter.

That embarrassment was nothing compared to Hussey's lurching fielding effort yesterday which will now be referred to as Husseyline. Unlike American political scandals that end in "gate", all infamous cricket incidents end in "line" invoking cricket's original dark scandal, Bodyline. Eg - Harmison's 2006 Ashes opening delivery to 2nd slip described as shoddyline. Or last year's Australia vs India drama in Sydney now remembered as Bollyline.

So how did Mr Cricket suddenly morph into Mr Bean? The only explanation I can come up with is Duminy has somehow stolen Mike Hussey's mojo. Can Huss get his mojo back and save the 2nd Test? And can Matthew Hayden save his Test career? Today we'll find out...

Australia still 25 runs behind SA, Hayden and Katich have already thrown away their wickets with ill-disciplined shots (Perth all over again).

In comes Mr Cricket. All Australia, pray he finds his mojo!

Punter out on 99, heart breaking! Plus any chance to save the match ended with his dismissal.

BTW, Jrod, that youtube edit is cruel - and I thought I was being tough on Mr Cricket.

Brett Lee just commits one of the unforgiveable sins of Test cricket - bowls McKenzie off a no-ball. Australia totally deserves to lose this Test match.

John that is one of the funniest ways someone has put this ordeal, in such a frustrating period for Aussie cricket.
Well written mate, and the 'stolen his mojo' theory is very well thought...actually gets you thinking eh!

The no-ball sin may just have cost us more than we can imagine, and tomorrow we got to hope the Cricket Gods give us some of our lost magic (or Mojo) back.

My theory on my site is the pattern:
1st Test by day 1 to 5: SA, AUS, SA, AUS, SA
2nd Test by day 1 to 5: SA, AUS, SA, SA, ?? ...maybe this change could see Aussie comeback.

But in probability with so few runs to play with in a whole days play, SA victory looking likely. But we'll have to wait!

How can you say "Australia totally deserves to lose this Test match". It is South Africa who deserve to win.

iCricket, of course, I'm torn between frustration at Australia's mistakes and admiration for South Africa's performance. Duminy and Steyn have particularly been awesome, Graeme Smith too as a captain and batsman (carrying an injury). But as is the case with any passionate sports fan, their focus is always on their own team's failures - not very logical but then blaming myself for a wicket falling because I get up from the couch isn't very logical either - that's sports for ya.

SA have been awesome & are for sure the best Test team in the world! They've outplayed the Aussies in every facet of the game & have shown guts on top of that to come back from dire situations.

It is great to see them dominate the Aussies & the series has all but been wrapped up,I cant see the Aussies taking 10 wickets let alone 3.SA have so many future stars of the game & the Aussies are losing all of them. The wheel has turned & its time for South Africa to dominate world cricket for years to come.

Unlucky Ricky, you are still 1 of the best but it may be time to retire with your name in tact my boy along with the rest of your team.

SA you beauties!!!

JC, we're gorn mate.

SA are #1 in the world now as I type - regardless of the result...

This is what needs to happen:

Drop Ponting and have him as a batsman.

Symmo & Haydos must go.

i agree with gaz, clarke needs to be elevated as captain and hayden/symonds need to be gone.
although i'm bitter at krejza being dumped for hauritz still, neither of them is the spin answer.
i honestly think since the series is over that the 3rd test team needs a shakeup.
bollinger better get a game or he may aswell forget ever representing australia.
i know siddle had issues with consistency but he is the only recent addition to the team that has really impressed me. the guy could get shot 4 times on his runup and still bowl at 150km/h.
maybe we should have our top order practice bowling since they cant bat? seems to have worked for our bowlers making both test scores admirable due to the wagginess.

Don't be so hard on your guys. They are still one of the best. My opinion is you need a captain. Ponting is not inspiring anyone at the moment.

Our guys have made mistakes but they make sure that they come back at them twice as hard. Which is what the Aussies used to do. Wouldn't you say the captain has something to do with that?

And by the way, as I am writing this, the fat lady has not yet sung.

GO BOKKE!!

Wicket taking bowlers minus Ponting = Reversal of Aussie Cricketing Fortune

BTW, one may say Hussey was hard done by the umpire giving him out when he didn't hit the ball in the 2nd innings. It was a truly bizarre dismissal - the ball striking his helmet then richocheting high into the air to mid-wicket. But I submit that the luck of the rub in umpiring decisions is part and parcel of a player's mojo.

In conclusion, Mike Hussey has still lost his mojo.
