Bovineline scuttles Roy's Test career

The incident where Andrew Symonds labelled Brendam McCullum a lump of bull dust (now known as Bovineline) has effectively killed off his Test career as Roy has been dumped from the South African tour. Set aside all the alcoholism and off-field behaviour for a moment. Is this a good thing?

Frankly, yes. A more valid reason to dump Andrew Symonds is because he can neither bat nor bowl at Test level. If Australia were dominating games with Warnie and Pigeon rolling the opposition batsmen, then Roy would be perfect. When you're mounting a huge first innings lead and you need a #6 batsman to come out and smash a run-a-ball fifty to demoralise the opposition before declaring half an hour before stumps, well, Roy is your man.

But if your bowlers struggle to take 20 wickets, your top order is shaky and your middle order even shakier, you need someone more reliable than a one-day slogger. You need a tough-as-nails character like AB who valued his wicket more than his first born. Roy values a six-pack of XXXX more than he values his wicket at the moment.

And did I mention he's a crap bowler?

P.S. - it's a lot of fun coming up with names for all the cricket scandals such as Braddyline, Bollyline, Shoddyline, etc. Looking forward to the next scandal...

Agree 100%. He seems to be good at getting a start, but doesn't ever look like he's gonna go on and make a big total. I think it's because he gets blood rushes and takes too many risks - hence what makes him a good limited overs player?

I agree that he should be dumped on form, however this frightens me as I don't think he's done anything particularly wrong. McCullum is a lump of cow dirt.

Btw, the Haddin scandal is now known as 'Hand of Dog'

2008 Tour of the Windies - Roy pretty much won us that test series with the bat. An ugly year would have been much uglier if we dropped a test or 2 there.

It was the coming of age of Roy the test bastmen. Unfortunately it was followed by the coming of age of Roy the beer swilling, gone fishing, loudmouthed primadonna.

p.s. His bowling was never up to scratch, but geez, it can't be worse than McDonald. If the definition of a Test allrounder is someone who is not good enough to be a test batsmen and not good enough to be a test bowler - then the Ranga fits the bill perfectly!

Symonds hasn't done anything wrong? He hasn't done anything particularly right either. Can you think of any significant contributions he's made at Test level apart from that one Ashes Test at the MCG when we were already hammering the Poms?

It's a bit different to Matt Hayden. I always felt Haydos had it in him to perform much better than he was in recent years but was too stubborn and/or proud to change his batting approach. But with Andrew Symonds, he doesn't even have it in him. One day cricket, absolutely. Twenty20, bring it on. But high pressure Test cricket - he lacks the chops.

hewy, agree re McDonald too. I say scrap the whole allrounder goal - it just aint gonna happen. A genuine allrounder comes along only once or twice a generation. All we end up doing is choosing a guy who doesn't quite cut it as a #6 batsman or a #5 bowler.

BTW, just thought of a better name for the Roy scandal - bovineline. Well, maybe...

I meant he hasn't done anything particularly bad off the field. His on field performances should see him dropped for poor form, and with the way he's gone in state cricket cricket this year he should never have been recalled.

Here's a timeline of his mis-demeaners, and to me there's nothing in there that deserves suspension...

Not sold on Bovineline, maybe Dog Gate or Dogate...

I actually quite like the soccer reference with Hand of Dog

I'm going to rise to the bait and say that onfield, Symonds was imposing himself on the Test cricket scene. The year leading up to going fishing he played 9 test matches for 777 runs at an average of 77.7 - (second to Jacques with 806 at 50.37). His average for the period was only bettered by Chanderpaul, Jayawardene and Sangakarra - 3 guys in unbelievable form.

He looked really good in both innings in Perth before being out thought by Smith (as a lot of the top order was). He should never have played in Melbourne with his injury.

Saying all that - I agree that he definately shouldn't go to SA - he's in a strange place at the moment. Punter can barely run the dressing room as it is, so he doesn't need more destabilising influences at the moment.

Now a days the performance has been reduced for Australians, Best of luck for the rest of matches.

Explain Hand of Dog to me, I don't follow soccer so I don't get the reference.

'86 soccer world cup. England vs Argentina, qtr finals.
Diego Maradona literally punched the ball into the net for the win - The 'Hand of God'.
(Maradona claimed it was God's hand that punched it in!!).
Don't forget this came after the Falklands war so it was a real grudge match

Loved the 'Hand of Dog' comment.

Fact: Haddin has let through 135 byes in 12 tests. Maybe he should spend more time catching the ball and less time punching the stumps.
