Cricinfo continue to dole out the legspin love (and no Hewy, legspin love is not creepy, it's a beautiful thing). This time, Christian Ryan lobbies for Bryce McGain to play in the Ashes and empathises with his pain at Newlands:

There came a moment - 5.1 overs into his Test debut was the moment - when you stopped worrying about what might happen to Bryce McGain's next delivery and you started to fear for the next 25 years of his life.

Then they threw everything but the kitchen sink at Bryce from his very first delivery. It was a deliberate ploy and could've gone either way. It went, lamentably for Bryce and legspin in general, South Africa's way. Kudos to the Proteas - they caused the Australian selectors to shuffle back and forth between spinners in a way to guarantee none of them would succeed.

To his credit, Bryce McGain still hopes to play the Ashes. And Warnie himself thinks Bryce should play. Who am I to argue with the sheik? Bryce should play if only to see how the English respond. Would they have the stones to attempt hitting him out of the attack? Just imagine Bryce's first over at Lords with KP on strike. Now that would be an encounter worth losing sleep over.

While I do have love for legpsin, McGain is not the answer. He's too old and after that whoopin he took he will never be the same.
We all know that Warnie took a hiding in his first test, but McGain is 37 and doesnt have 10 years to warm our hearts. If we take him to England I may die a little inside.

Legspin is certainly an art that needs time. A leggie must be groomed. It is one good match which can make a leggie.Once a leggie settles down he is one of the toughest (if not the toughest) to play. Infact Indians are the only one who r not circumspect against legspin, that too if I may add the oldies like Sachin & Laxman.

McGain is too old to groom. Aussies should look for newer options. This might take time but it is worth it. I feel a leggie must get atleast 10 test to try and prove his worth.

India are budding 2 leggies, Mishra and Chawla. While Mishra is 26 yrs old, Chawla is 20. Both have time on their hands. We also have a good 3rd leggie called Chetanya Nanda, but he is 30 so he seems highly unlikely to play for India. Similarly Aussies should look for raw and young leggies and groom them.
