2009 Ashes, 2nd Test, Day 4: Lords, the anti-Cardiff

The 2nd Test at Lords has unfolded like some sort of twisted anti-Cardiff. Australia have bowled like England did in the 1st Test. Our batsmen have thrown our wickets away with reckless abandon, again emulating England's effort at Cardiff. And most disturbingly, Nathan Hauritz is taking genuine top order wickets. I just don't know what to think anymore.

According to anti-Cardiff theory, England should be pressing for a victory in the dying moments of the 5th day only to be denied by a stubborn 10th wicket stand. The problem with that theory is Australia will need to bat for 2 entire days. Is that possible?

It would require a Ricky Ponting double century with ample support from his middle-order. We would need a fair chunk of rain interruption. Only problem with rain is that kind of weather will suit the English bowlers who will be encouraged to bowl full at the stumps, swinging the ball. We don't want them bowling full. We want short, wide stuff. Just because they bowled short in Cardiff, got hammered then we tried it in the 1st innings and also got hammered is no reason not to try it now.

The other question is when will Andrew Strauss declare? He already proved me wrong by not enforcing the follow-on. If he had the stones, he should declare now and give his bowlers a full 6 sessions at the Aussies. But he seems the type of captain that would consider a 4th innings 521 run chase just not enough to guarantee victory. So I wouldn't be surprised to see him bat for another hour this morning. Suits me and any supporter of Australian cricket.

I bet Ponting is thinking of Stuart Clark sitting in the dressing rooms. must be wishing for some of that line and length today!

So who's going to get dropped after this rout? Johnson, maybe Siddle, depending on Lee's fitness? The selectors usually show no mercy after an Ashes loss!
Posted by MT on 2009-07-19 18:41:22
Maybe thinking too far into the future here, but the thought also occurred to me - I wonder if Ponting would retire if Australia lost the Ashes again? Or would he be hell bent on revenge Mark II?
Posted by MT on 2009-07-19 19:07:41
Lee won't play until test 3or 4 apparently. Side strain - 6 weeker min.
Posted by virtualgaz on 2009-07-19 19:18:10
Strauss surprises me again and declares overnight. I'm actually excited about this. England are still 95% chance of winning but there is the tiniest sliver of hope that Australia might pull a record setting run chase here. If Hughes is not out 50 at lunch, well, the Poms will be having a few quivers of doubt.
Posted by JC on 2009-07-19 20:16:52
Katich gone. 1 for 17. That smarts.
Posted by JC on 2009-07-19 20:29:52
Flintoff is in great form. Ponting looks to be in one of those huge innings moods. The irrestible force versus the immovable object. Classic Ashes contest.
Posted by JC on 2009-07-19 20:42:53
Phil Hughes given out when the ball touched the ground as Strauss caught it. If that had been referred to the 3rd ump, it would've been given benefit of the doubt. Wondering why the umps didn't refer it.
Posted by JC on 2009-07-19 21:02:21
Why does the ICC shiver to use the referral system? I don't see any harm coming from using it apart from maybe time. But in a Test match we'd happily trade off a few minutes over the 5 days to get a result without any controversy.

And Re the match, another wicket and Australia are nailed. Unless a good couple of sessions are rained out, which is unlikely. It somehow only rains when England want it to :-)

Ponting scares the hell out of me - we'll be fine once he's gone - as long as that's not late in the day tomorrow that is...

Couldn't stand the referral system myself - you go mental to celebrate a wicket and then end up looking like a melon when it's referred and given not out. It's use didn't always ensure the right decision either! Besides, as England have gone out of their way to prove over the years, human error is part of the game.
Posted by Rich on 2009-07-19 21:55:04
The thing about the referal system is they use it yesterday to give an English batsman a reprieve. Then fail to use it today in exactly the same circumstances. And the replay shows the ball hit the ground, it was not out. Why did the umpires not refer it? Makes no sense. Drives me crazy, these types of decisions.

On a very thinly related topic, I love after Ponting was unfairly given out in the 1st innings, Damien Martyn comments that he should've hit the ball better then he wouldn't have got out at all. Coming from Mr "Unfair LBW decisions in 2005 cost me my Test career", the irony was palpable.

Punter is looking as focused as I've ever seen him, it's like 2005 Old Trafford again (is that the game where he scored a 5th day hundred to save the Test?)

Ponting's innings is instrumental to Australia's cause - not just for this match but if he can hang around long enough, he can ground Flintoff down to a worn stub, hopefully neutralise him for the rest of the series.
Posted by JC on 2009-07-19 22:08:06
I agree human error is part of the game and love to see 'in the moment excitement' myself. But we have to draw a line. Mistakes will always happen, but all we want is the best accuracy, and least wrong decisions.

In general, any glaring error reflects badly on everyone involved - The umpires, the players and the game itself. It doesn't matter if one ends up looking like a melon when it's referred and given not out - what matters is if its actually out or not.
Posted by Ajesh Nag on 2009-07-19 22:13:14
Game over, Ponting out. I didn't like the way he was playing away from his body immediately after lunch, only took an over and a half of that kind of batting to get himself out. The lunch break seemed to have broken his concentration.
Posted by JC on 2009-07-19 22:48:15
Yeah, quite why todays incident didn't go up to the tv umpire is beyond me.

A lot of the players were critical of the referrals becasue it detracts from the excitement of the game, not just the fans - it took something away from the cricket watching experience. id rather preserve that at the expense of 100 per cent accuracy. The game has survived thus far as it is.

Ponting gone, right, should be fine from here...

Whispers on TMS that this may be Flintoff's last ever Test...
Posted by Rich on 2009-07-19 22:53:33
Katich out off a no ball too. I'm in favour of the referral system, bad decisions create too much bad blood in a tight Test - remember the Sydney Test against India?

Hussy looking like a cat on a hot tin roof, not much longer for him surely?
Posted by MT on 2009-07-19 23:11:38
Oh, and yes JC - that epic Ponting rearguard in 2005 was at Old Trafford. He is some player - weirdly I often think he's underrated, over here best batsmen of this generation discussions are usually dominated by Lara and Tendulkar, but surely he's up there with them?
Posted by Rich on 2009-07-19 23:13:02
Mr Cricket departs... some doubt about that one too. Goes to show you get all the luck when things are going for you.
Posted by Rich on 2009-07-19 23:32:14
Yeah didn't think Hussey hit that one when I saw it.
